    Little Dix

    Hello,

We are pondering a 5 night trip to Little Dix in August. We are traveling with our 7 year. I am hoping that I might be able to get some feed back with regard to whether with property is "child" friendly (for a normal, well behaved child)in the summer. Also, I am hoping to gain some information on the diifference (aside that which is printed on the web site) with regard to room types - in particular comments on the beachfront cottage versus a premium oceanview room. Finally, how is the new junior suite compared to the beachfront & premium oceanview. Thanks!

    Re: Little Dix

Hi llfoster. I might be able to help. We visit Virgin Gorda annually in September. We don't stay at Little Dix but we visit the property annually. First, this is a nice time of the year because you will not have a lot of people. You could have a little more rain but usually not an all day thing. The resort is very "open air" I believe a well behaved 7 year old would have a fantastic time and so would you. The ocean front units are beautiful. If its within your budget, I would do this. They have "little huts" on stilts. Very neat! I haven't seen the rooms. I believe LDB just added villas on their property but not as close to the ocean. Have you looked at this option also? This might give you a little more room and allow you to prepare meals if you wanted,. (or at least have snacks!) Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information!! I appreciate it. Another possibility is Raffles on Canouan. I've read the TripAdvisor reviews but am still looking for a bit more feedback. Have you (or anybody else reading this) been to Raffles????

    Re: Little Dix

Haven't been there but had planned to go before it changed hands a few years ago. I think if you go there, you are very self-contained with activities. If you go to Little Dix, you will be able to explore VG and the surrounding areas easier with just a ferry ride. Raffles has golf whereas Little Dix doesn't have golf. How do the prices compare? Not sure which would have "better" weather that time of year.

    Re: Little Dix

My husband and I have wanted to go to Little Dix for a long time. Now, we are thinking about our 25th Wedding Anniversary in January and where to go. Back when we first heard of Little DIx, it was a highly lauded resort where you had every luxury and any thing you had ever wanted in a resort. Is it still that way? I have found with a few resorts that the accomodations are not kept up and they can get dingy. Anyone have this experience at Little Dix. Nothing ticks me off more than a poorly maintained or dirty room that costs a mint. I am also very detail oriented.

We had doubted whether a beach vacation was for us, but we just got back from a week at Sea Pines, Hilton HEad and were so happy lazing about on the beach that we would have stayed forever. I would highly recommend HH to anyone, especially with kids as the water is very shallow. Sea Pines is supposed to have less undertow than the north end. We don't have kids, but they were not too bothersome there for some reason.

But, mostly we are looking for a luxe and romantic place to celebrate being able to stay together for this long. It would have to be warmer than the Carolinas or Bermuda are in January, an island that is mostly resort and limited to older kids. Any ideas would be welcome.

    Re: Little Dix

Hi Stephhtd: Little Dix Bay for a 25th anniversary is a great choice in January. We have not stayed at that property but go to Virgin Gorda yearly. The property is definitely kept up to par. They have been doing renovations and I believe they are all finished. I believe they just added villas. The location is great so that you can walk into Spanish Town or take an easy trip to "The Baths". The units on the beach are set up on stilts. The open air dining is beautiful. Also, if you like tennis, the tennis courts are great. The property is set on beautiful landscaped grounds. When we visited, it seemed like a lot of honeymooners. Very private and tranquil. Also, if you are considering VG, you might want to look at Peter Island. PI is located a short ride from Tortola. It is its own island.

Because this is a special occasion, might consider one of the new villas being offered by Little Dix. I haven't seen any LL packages but I have seen them offered for Peter Island. If you would like more info on the VG area, I would be happy to help. ME at The Baths.

Thank you for the information. I think you are very helpful. We are definitely considering Peter Island and Little Dix for this special anniversary. Other friends have recommended Exuma the Four SEasons, but kids seem pretty prevalent and they are not our thing.

    Re: Little Dix

Hi stephtd. Also consider Biras Creek with Peter Island and Little Dix Bay. Watch the LL auctions I believe Biras and Peter Island have been listed. If you are planning to go in January, I would suggest working on it as soon as possible because it is the high season and both properties seem to fill up during this time. Also, you might want to look at air options. You can decide if you want to fly into Tortola or fly into San Juan/St. Thomas and ferry/fly directly to Virgin Gorda.

    Re: Little Dix

Very, very expensive. Time was, the service was merely uneven, as loyalty and pride of some long-term employees more than offset the indifference of younger staff. That balance has shifted over the years. (We've been there 5 times, beginning more than 20 years ago. Most recent viisit was 2 yaers ago.) The pluses: great half-moon of beach; uncrowded feeling of resort even when full; spectacular private boat ride from Tortola; great spa location and good staff there; water sports availabilities and people are good. The lows: price (yikes!); food which is good quality but perpetually undistinguished; occasional staff rudeness. Oh yes. You can rent a Jeep or Suzuki on-premise and explore the island, and you can walk into town for dinner and grab a cab back--assuming you don't take the meal plan, or even if you do.We've also been to Boiras Creek and Peter Island. The former is rumored to be up for sale, and needs some refurbishment. The latter is frequentlt visited by daytrippers off of boats, and is also the occasional prize for sales incentives, both of which change the character of the place. If you are determined to visit Little Dix, ponder their split program between Caneel and LD. In truth, there are no spectacular resorts which offer great beauty, a sense of enormous privilege at being there underpinned by attentive and gracious staff, a brilliant chef and an ambiance of "pinch me." None of the Four Seasons, not La Semana, none of the places on Anguilla. For the future, think about two new places coming to the Turks & Caicos, a Mandarin and a Ritz. Not open for a year or two. One thought: the Meridian Club, on a private island in the Turks 7Caicos. $800 a day gets you 3 meas and one of 12 rooms, No a/c. But a really beautiful place if you love the sea. Extraordinary loyal (and monied) following. Simple, and simply delightful. I'm sure they have a web site.

    Good luck.
