I too have Verizon and have had no luck using my cellular phone in the Caribbean. I tried while we were in the Bahamas and Antigua. Also, I tried using my calling card that I use in the states when I call long distance (rather than using the cell phone) and it didn't work either.
I ended up with a large phone charge on my Visa for a one minute call to my young nephew, to wish him a happy birthday, from Antigua. All we did was leave a message on the machine and it was $34.00. There was information next to the phone in the room, which said to use your Visa and call the number on this information card . It claimed to be the cheaper way to call from the Caribbean. Wow, I hate to see how much the minute call would have been ,ifit had done another way. So be careful when calling out.

Good morning. We have Verizon and I believe we have used it in Antigua and Anguilla the past couple years.

Oops, my wife just scolded me and said "we did not get service on our Verizon wireless from Antigua or Anguilla". We did get service from Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and St. Martin. Sorry for mis-info.

It is important that you call verizon ahead of time and ask for "roaming" capabilities for the D.R. They will be sure you have it. You also have to update your regular roaming by dialing "star" 224. I have used my cellphone also in CAncun with no problem.
