Bonniejoy03,
Having been caught in the volcanic ash clouds in April, we opted to take the MSC Poesia from NYC to Hamburg on April 30th. One stop on this transatlantic crossing was Ponta Delgado. I got the impression that this port was a typical stop-over on transatlantic crossings coming and going. Unfortunately, the weather was so bad, that very few people left the ship to go on the island excursions. Here is a link you might enjpoy: http://www.azores-islands.info/uk/pl...a-delgada.html. There are a few thing you might like to visit, like the crater lakes. Ponta Delgada is a good base from which to make day tours of the volcanic crater lakes and thermal springs in the centre of the island. A short drive north-west of the city is the spectacular setting of Caldeira das Sete Cidades, an extinct volcano which holds two adjoining lakes, one emerald-green and the other sapphire-blue. On the east side of the island and within easy driving distance from the capital lies the spa resort of Furnas. Alive with steam vents, thermal pools, hot springs and boiling mud, Furnas is the best place to witness the geothermal activity taking place beneath the surface of the Azores.
To me, it seems like a good stop-over place, but I doubt that you would enjoy spending a vacation there. It is nothing like the islands you are used to in the Caribbean.
Kind Regards,

Thanks L. It does look so different and it is an easy 5 hour flight from Boston. (we have friends and family in the Boston area). I looked at some of the other islands other than the main port area. It has fallen down our list as we probably will go to Sweden....

Hi bonniejoy,
It is very different from the BVIs, mostly volcanic rock and large pineapple plantations. I didn't realize it was only a 5 hour flight from Boston. By boat it took us 8 or 9 nights. Sweden sounds nice, especially with a nice souvenir to bring home. Good luck!
