Greece Says It Will Pay For Tourist Delays
Several news sites are reporting today the the government of Greece is going to cover costs related to travel delays to their country. Below is a copy of the article on About.com:
Greece Says It Will Pay for Tourist DelaysTuesday June 22, 2010
In an effort to encourage tourism in Greece during this difficult year, Greece's Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pavlos Geroulanos, says that Greece will cover the costs of tourists delayed in Greece, whether it is from strikes or even the Icelandic volcanic ash plume.
Details on the offer are skimpy, but would include room and board for stranded passengers in Greece. It is also meant to be retroactive for passengers who were stranded in Greece in April during the peak of the travel crisis caused by the volcanic eruption.
A strike in Greece is affecting railway operations with intermittent interruptionstoday through Thursday, and the port of Piraeus, which serves ferries and cruise ships, is expected to be at least partially idle on Wednesday. A major national strike is scheduled for June 29th.
This is great news for those of us hesitating to book travel to this country.

Re: Greece Says It Will Pay For Tourist Delays
very interesting Shy.
I have to add comment that for travelers in the States, a major US airline that serves ATH has been fully booked on most flights in the past 2 weeks alone. I'm not sure about other time frames but Greece's ills don't seem to be affecting tourism that much (maybe that's why they offered the "strike" coverage)
4 friends/family members who were in Greece in the last week and they said everywhere they went was extremely busy and crowded in the ports and on excursions.
I'll be curious to hear more as the strikes proceed.
Thanks for the article."wherever you go, there you are"
