Malta anyone?

Has anyone ventured out to Malta? We are currently in Eastern Europe and are having a hard time finding a good travel book, or any travel book, on Malta. I am covering my bases with research online but would love some personal input if you have any recommendations.

Hi D.... we visited Malta in the 90's and loved it! We had stayed at the Crown Plaza (not sure if it still there.) The Maltese people were so warm and inviting. The history is amazing. I recommend it! We used the bus system to navigate the island. THere are a few lovely offshore islands to visit.. We took a ferry. You might even want to add a night or two there (Gozo and Comino?)

We booked the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Valletta through LL for 3 nights and added an extra two nights to our getaway at the Fortina Spa Resort. I would like to make it to Comino and see the Blue Lagoon. Thank you for your input!

I was able to snag the auction for our June visit to Malta and Sicily. Would love to hear your assessment of the Malta place.

Unfortunately the Grand Hotel Excelsior did not meet our expectations. It is our least favorite LL package by far. There seemed to be an issue with every detail of our trip. I will try to get a full review written soon.

However, with pricing being so low on LL, it is still a good deal for Malta. Just not the luxury experience that we've been spoiled with in the past during our LL bookings.

We went to Malta in the 90s and LOVED it. We also took a boat and plane to the outlying islands. At the time, we stayed at the Crown Plaza. We did not rent a car-we took the local bus to Valleta and other areas. At the time, they were filming a movie with (I believe) Matthew Maconaghy. They have (or had) a large set in Malta. Many films are filmed there (I believe they also have a big "tank" for water scenes.).

That sounds rather disappointing. I wish I had had your assessment of the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Valetta, Malta earlier, before I auctioned the LL package. Well, the price was very little, for the LL package, maybe it won't be all that bad this coming June.
We also had a very, very disappointing experience with the Emilio Reggio,in Italy, with a LL property a while back. There i wouldn't want to send my worst enemy to. I complained to LL about it, but nothing ever became of it.

Thanks for your reply. We do not plan to rent a car in Valetta, so it is good to know that you can get around on bus while in Malta.
