$1 MYSTERY AUCTION BIDS

I've noticed that someone bids $1 on almost every mystery auction. Then someone bids $2, then $3, then it eventually gets to $100 and starts approaching a reasonable amount. Has anyone ever bought a mystery auction package for only $1? What's the lowest price that a mystery auction has gone for?

Like grading on a curve for a test, someone will always score high and ruin it for everyone else

Or, like playing the card game Sh!t on Your Neighbor. In the beginning, everyone behaves; but inevitably, the drive to win overrules all.

If everyone could agree to bid no more than X dollars, or take turns; but then where would all the fun and the thrill of winning be?
