10 of the Weirdest Things You Can Eat in latin America

10 of the weirdest things you can eat in Latin America | Matador Network

I think I could eat the Big Butt Ants, Coconut Grubs, Cuy, and Ant Eggs and Worm Tacos, but I'd have a hard time with the other items.

While we're on the subject, what's the weirdest thing you've had to eat or drink while traveling?

Only thing we tried are the coconut grubs in Ecuador - they really do taste like coconut - however, when we tried them the grubs were still alive and not cooked. It was hard to eat a live grub and I would not do it again! We also tried lemon ants - also alive and they did taste like lemon. Would not really try any of these other things. We did have llama steaks but not llama brains like in the article.

Durian Fruit is the grossest thing I ate in my life. My husband liked it, but for me, it was "projectiled" at once. UGH.

We ate a stew of mysteries at Kwadule Lodge with the Kuna Indians in Panama. I don't want to know what was in it but I got very creeped out thinking about it. They did serve jello also....or at least I thought it was jello.....

there is a local market near us that actually sells durain fruit - evidently you need a special permit to export it into the US and sell it - it does smell even before it is cut up!

I had fried crickets in a very authentic Mexican restaurant in Portland, OR. Outside the U.S., the weirdest thing I ever ate was ais kacang, a bizarre mixture of shaved ice, red beans, corn, grass jelly and evaporated milk when I was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

While shopping in my local Asian grocery store I accidentally picked up a packet of wafer cookies that I thought were lemon flavored. In my haste I only glanced at the yellow image on the front and assumed it was lemon because it was yellow. Well, I will never make this mistake again!

When I got around to opening the cookies the first thing that hit me (literally) was the horrific smell that assaulted my nostrils. A cookie should never EVER smell so putrid that you immediately recoil away from it, lol! Thinking I had bought a contaminated product, I took a closer look at the package and discovered that my lemon wafers were actually durian flavored. YUCK!

I find it hard to believe that anyone could eat something so vile. The stench alone was so nauseating that I held the package as far away from my body as I ran to toss it in the trash. I then lite a vanilla scented candle to eradicate the pungent smell from my kitchen. Yes, it really was THAT bad!

As I was looking for a pic of the cookie package to post (you need to see how innocent it looks, lol), I came across this funny blog entry that describes my reactions to a tee! What horror did I bring into my house? « journey to build a creative business
