In this case, it's all about the retirement $$.
AA was the only major with a plan and now they have reason to scrap it--just like others have done in past "bankruptcies"."wherever you go, there you are"

Can they restructure if they drop the retirement $$??? What's your prediction with whom they might merge? United and Continental/USAir and Delta and Northwest are done, remains British Air possibly but unlikely, Alaska is still saying "no thanks", Southwest is too small... What does the industry think???

I agree with kyshel, the AA bankruptcy will enable the company to make major adjustments in their retirement programs as well as eliminate unprofitable routes and probably cancel some leases on older aircraft. They will do a lot of internal restructuring. I think it's a financial play (maybe not so nice for employees, but a harsh business decision).
As far as AAdvantage Miles, I've gone through two Continental bankruptcies, and one each with Delta, Northwest, US Airways. When Eastern Air Lines went under 1991, my FF miles rolled over into the Continental OnePass program (now those miles will soon roll over into United's program). When Pan Am went under, my WorldPass miles moved to Delta.
It will be interesting to see what happens.....hope it doesn't reduce too many of my favorite South American destinations.- Ω -

AA has been proactive in their communications. Received emails assuring us that it is business as usual. We will be using AA in January. Hopefully it will be fine...
