Maybe we should just have one government owned and operated airline in the USA. We could call it Air America....no, that name was already used by the CIA during the early days in Southeast Asia and we all know how that finally worked out.
Possibly we could use the old Aeroflot as a business model....remember when that was totally run by the Soviet Union.....no, maybe that's not the answer either (they used to save money by not performing maintenance).....they experienced a crash about every week or two as I recall.
Let's just let these legacy airlines sort it out....the executives can continue amassing huge stock deals, the union leaders can continue to enrage their members and threaten strikes, passengers can take trains, boats, a bus here and there or maybe even drive their own cars (can you afford the price of a gas) while the smaller airlines keep eating away at their markets here and there and we can shop the web for those sales that always seems to pop up.
I don't mind paying a little more for airfares, as long as I can keep buying great luxury packages at deeply discounted prices here on Luxury Link (don't start another round of price increases here - please!).- Ω -

Just noticed in Financial Times that IAG may step up to the plate on the American Airlines deal. Probably would be better than a USAir deal! Could be a good move for OneWorld Alliance.

I am a paying customer and pretty much always fly out of Philadelphia as the 1st leg of a trip and it would not be good for me ;-(
Philadelphia city hall thinks the merger would be a good thing and create jobs, more business at Philly international, etc., however, they seem to totally forget that Philadelphia International is not a decent airport - no merger would fix this.
USAir has such a bad reputation these days so if they were the majority owner of AA like United is for Continental then we all could be in troubleRoam if you want to, roam around the world...........

40,000 FF miles gets you to Europe on AA and other airlines in off season. We are flying first class, in lay flat beds, for a mere 30K o/w on USAirways to Munich next.February and 30K back in March in coach.
We have flown on FF miles with our various credit cards for years. We are flying back to Europe next June for a mere 20K o/w on Air Berlin, an AA partner, and get this, the fees/taxes is $22.50. Can't beat that. Unfortunately, no business class seats available on Air Berlin. O/W tickets allow us to decide if we want to take a transatlantic cruise back or book another O/W ticket back later.

Nice if you can get one of those credit cards or want to travel to Europe in the winter or can afford to pay the cost of the one way ticket back to the states.
It has taken me a few years just to accumulate the 28,000 miles I currently have with United/Continental. These mergers don't do anything for me except to raise the cost and give me less flight choices.Roam if you want to, roam around the world...........

Be Bold
Denise, you might venture beyond conventional methods for accumulating miles:

.....would you risk $1.00 for two weeks of exploration?
