10-16-2007, 05:38 AMBidding against yourself
As a general warning to all users of Luxury Link:
In february I made a bid for a hotel offer on Luxury Link. Shortly before the auction ended, I was the highest bidder and to ensure this position I decided to increase the bid, thinking that the newbid, as on so many other auction sites, would not become effective unless a third party bidder would make a bid exceeding my original bid. However, my new bid was on Luxury Linkregistrered as a bid against my original bid and I was thus bidding against myself.
Despite several e-mails asking Luxury Link to inform me of the bid history and comment on the this default in their bidding system, I have not received any reply! Accordingly be aware that you do not bid against yourself (you will get no help from Luxury Link).

Re: Bidding against yourself

So you had two accounts that bid against each other. Then you expected the auctioneer to give you the lowest bid to one of your accounts? I've only bid on eBay before LL and never heard of such a thing. May I ask, where you can practice this tactic?

Re: Bidding against yourself
I remember when I first started bidding (many moons ago) I did something stupid (can't remember what now) and lost out on that auction. It happens when you're not familiar with the rules.
Not sure if I agree that LL should be responsible for your mistake though.
Hope you enjoyed your trip at least.

I didn't know about the five minute rule and one auction kept going and going, THEN I read the rules and well, I got with the program--but not the pakcage--I gave up!!

Hi Kapserphilip
It sounds like you were bidding against yourself, maximum bidding does not exsist on LL. I know that I have already used this system on Ebay, were you can post a maximum bid, and it is automatically use as needed. Without necessarily reaching your highest bid. Also there is no history posted, so you are only bidding againt the last bidder. On LL you can bid against yourself as many times as you want, it is the last bid that counts.

That is very frustrating and I am surprised how many people experienced difficulty on their early days of learning the rules of the auction. I experienced a number of issues when I first started as well. I had auction go into overtime for 1/2 hour and the delay between the email and my server made me not get notice and I lost the package after thinking I had won the package 5 minutes earlier.
Perhaps LL can think of some solutions to improve this. Hard core, long time LL users probably have it all down at this point, but i can image that new users might really get frustrated and go elsewhere.

Re: Bidding against yourself
I too remember some early frustration when bidding on that first auction - thinking I had it when the time ran out, and then realizing LL doesn't operate like EBay or the other sites. Once you read the rules, it begins to make sense and you get the hang of it. It's a different kind of auction experience and it gives those who are willing to pay more the opportunity to do so without dealing with last-second "snipers" as you'd have on the other sites. It's a bit more relaxed and I like it. For that reason, there is absolutely no reason to "bid against yourself" in order to up your chances, but you do need to keep yourself in the auction at the very end.

No, I did not have two accounts. I had and have one account and after having made a (first) bid on this account, I entered a higher bid on the same account with no third party bidding between the two bids. Ifyou follow this procedure on e.g.eBaythe second bid will not be "activated" unless a third party bidder outbids your first bid.

As far as I read the rules, they do not outline the issue. But even if I am mistaken,I see no reason why LL does not reply to my e-mails indicating where in the rules the situation is outlined.
