A Bikers Delight – Washington to Pittsburgh by bike

Heres a way to kiss summer goodbye or take in the fall foliage without having to deal with traffic: bicycle from Washington to Pittsburgh using more than 300 miles of off-road trails through retired railway corridors.
Last December, the finishing touches were put on a section linking Maryland and Pennsylcania along the Great Allegheny Passaage, a 132-mile path from suaburban Pittsburgh to Cumberland, MD, where it links to the Cheseapeak and Ohio Canal towpath, shown here, in Washington.


The Allegheny trail has an average grede of under two percent, so the average cyclist should be able to complete the entire route in about a week (two weeks for hikers), the trail authorities say. Lodging options range from campsites to hotels.

Tourist attractions are also accessible from the trail, including Frank Lloyd Wrights Fallingwater, about 65 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, between Mill Runn and Ohiopyle, PA. For more information you can visit www.atarail.org.

How delightful is that photo? Thank you for sharing this, even though I'm not one to bike for more than a few hours, it looks so inviting. I almost thought it was the English countryside! We live somewhat near some of the canals in Ohio and Indiana and they are truly
scenes form the past.
