Car Rental Abroad
Renting a car overseas can be a tricky business: Either you need to spring for pricey insurance and there are usually four types that you must accept or decline when you sign the rental contract: collision-damage, third-party liability, personal accident, and personal property or you need to be sure that the credit card you use will truly protect you from the range of charges you could conceivably get stuck with.
Determining just how much protection your credit card will provide is in turn a tricky business. It requires phoning your card issuer before you arrive at the rental counter and asking questions like: Do you cover rental-car collision/damage and theft/loss? Do you cover overseas rentals? What countries, types of vehicles, or rental lengths are excluded? Is the coverage secondary (meaning, you need to file a claim with your own auto insurance company first and the credit card will pay only what your auto insurance doesn’t) or primary? Do you cover additional fees charged by the rental car company, such as loss-of-use or diminished-value fees?
Would love to hear how you handle car rentals abroad.

Depends on the country, base insurance (personal or credit card coverage)

Most credit cards cover all the basics. That's why I always decline any additional insurance that the rental company offers.
