Crash Part 2 changing Your Travel Plans?
Without getting into politics, I'm curious if the latest stock market slide is changing your future travel plans. I've heard that the last time this happened, many people cancelled booked trips. This left travel companies scrambling to fill those spots.
For me, it is not changing whether I will travel. What it is affecting is where I will go. Unrest in some areas of the world is causing us hesitation to book to some places on our bucket list.

08-08-2011, 07:32 PMUnfortunately, yes. I was planning on a tour of Egypt in September but since their elections will be in September and there are new demonstrations going on there, I may plan on just staying closer to home.

Well my retirement savings plans took a hit so I may not be able to retire in 6 years like I was planning but I am still going on my trips - I figure as long as I am still working and the house is finally paid off, I am going to enjoy my travel as long as I can!

I have some guaranteed growth annuities--one doubles and one maxes out at 20%. (they all look VERY grim today--thank you Congress and Prez) I'll be able to take $ out in 2 1/2 yrs but I've decided to wait until 2017and get it out for travel when I want it. I put it there for that purpose--to splurge...maybe luncheon on the Orient Express?
Hubby will retire in 5, so I need to prepare to BUY tickets (or upgrades) as needed. I'm so happy we did Egypt last year! Asia is getting better and better for prices and stability (unless you count the tsunami/earthquake issues) But, US financial tremors are pretty severe right now..."wherever you go, there you are"

I think most peoples retirement plans took a dramatic hit these last few weeks/days, ours included. At these trying times, it might not be a bad idea to stick some cash into the bank, maybe a money market account. I know, the interest is lousy and will stay that way till 2013, but at least you stop the "bleeding" from the stock markets.
We have made our travel plans and paid for already well into next year. Unfortunately, we scrapped Egypt which was on our bucket list. We missed the LL Oberoi Nile Cruise package, which is just as well, since there is a lot of unrest there which might take some time to settle down.
We also missed the 6-day, two different location, Costa Rica Rain Forrest Tour package which I think [email protected] is taking. Would have loved to take that trip, but I am hoping LL will put it back on in the near future.
These days, we travel mainly in Southern Germany, Austria, Italy France and Switzerland where the political situation is pretty calm. However, who would have thought that laid-back Oslo would be erupting with terrorist acts, killings and unrest. Nor did we think London was a particularly dangerous place to visit, but it was, as it turned out to be in the last two weeks.
We would love to see more new LL packages in Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France.

I am doing the CR rain forest tour in March 2012 - we won 2 auctions for CR and are putting them together for a 2 week trip. I have seen the rain forest tour up again off and on so keep looking for it - they are really great to deal with and we are looking forward to the trip!
I have a friend who is in London now and she said it is pretty scary - she leaves for Paris next week and hopes it stays calm there and then she will move on to Austria to visit her family.
