Deadly Journeys - trips you will never see on LL!
I am now hooked on the show "Deadly Journeys" - these are some trips you will never see offered on LL.
I just watched one about the road from La Paz, Bolivia down into the Amazon - evidently this is the only road and is considered one of the worst roads to travel in the whole world - it was pretty scary and I know I would never travel this road!
Saw other ones in Brazil, Panama, Colombia, Phillipines, and the Congo - these are some intense ways to travel.
What is interesting is the fact that you get to see some areas that you and I will probably never see and maybe we would not even want to! The show is an exciting way to see some alternate means of travel.

06-02-2011, 03:21 AMDenise.....haven't seen "Deadly Journeys" but wondering if the show you mentioned was about this ride THE WORLD'S MOST DANGEROUS ROAD | Gravity Assisted Mountain Biking - all about mountain bike rides, bike races, cycle touring and more
I think j-s-2 might have made that trip some years back. Seems like I recall an old posting on that bike ride!
IMO....the Andes offer a variety of daily 'deadly journeys,' especially those involving local bus transportation. One that immediately comes to mind is the bus trip from Guayaquil to Cuneca...about 30% of the time in clouds, lots of mud slides and almost no guard rails....can take eight to fifteen hours depending on conditions......less than 30 minutes by air!- Ω -

06-02-2011, 08:02 AMGood memory!
Yes, it was probably two or three years ago, when I posted about my bicycle ride down this highway in Bolivia.
It was a time in my life when I had less experience, less money and certainly a complete lack of good sense.
Fortunately, I have made gains in all three areas over the past years. Even some gains in the size of my (deleted).
For those who wish to face death at every turn and see way too many physical signs of actual loss of life, this is the perfect adventure.

I think Deadly Journeys does cover the most deadly roads - there was one episode where they did that horrible road between la Paz and the Amazon - the truck driver they were featuring drives for 24 hours straight down and back on this really bad road - chews coca leaves to help stay awake and then he makes the return trip with the back of the truck filled with cows and he does all for around $130/month.
Not for me - thank you very much!
Scenery is great but I value my life

06-03-2011, 11:29 AMdhdanner, sounds like the way I drive down to Florida, minus the cows. Good thing I'm going to Peru next month so I can restock my coca leaf stash.

06-03-2011, 01:57 PMDenise & Mountie, trust me, you don't have to watch special TV programs to understand how deadly the roads can be in many Central and South American countries.
Here is a recent example of a bus accident in Peru:

My bus riding adventures in Central and South American are in my past.

during my 1st trip to Guatemala we were on a little tour bus going from Antigua to Lake Atitlan - very crowded and the driver must have throught he was driving in one of the formula 1 races - very fast on not the best of roads. He dropped us off at Pana and we were getting picked up about 6 hours later at this hotel - so we were waiting just inside the gate of the hotel to get picked up when the bus driver comes speeding around the corner and in the gate - the bus clipped me and I went flying down into a stairwell - panic insues - my husband looks around and he did'nt know what happened to me (I am lying down in the stairwell - by some miracle totally unhurt) the driver runs off the bus screaming "madre de dios", the hotel groundskeepers all drop their rakes and brooms and come running. I pop up from the stairwell saying I am OK while they are all trying to pick me up. I think the bus driver was afraid he would be fired and the company he worked for sued - I know enough Spanish to understand some were saying "oh my God she is an American tourist - what should we do" Luckily I was not hurt and reassured everyone that all was well.
Driving in some countries is dangerous and being a pedestrian can be dangerous too - I have had my share of adventures but I know I will not be taking some of the journeys I have seen on this show!

I just saw a TV commercial for Mitsubishi using the road in Bolivia - basically saying if their car can take the worst road in the world then it can take any road youwant to travel - everyone is getting into the act ;-)
