The drive to RockyMountainNational Park in Colorado is so beautiful! Coming from Denver the drive was only an hour and a half to 2 hours. The natural beauty is so breathtaking. It's amazing to me, no matter how many times I've seen the mountains I still get awe-struck by them! The experience at the park was just lovely too. We hiked around there and people can camp out as well. I would highly recommend experiencing this drive.

I absolutely loved the drive to Hana, Maui, but I preferred making tht return trip on a motorcycle. I was fortunate enough to make the drive with 2 friends--one in the car and one on the bike. WOOOHOOO--those curves are ama

I still believe the best drive is still from the airport to home [after a long trip].

Cape Cod is beautiful and has a lot to see. Driving from Bourne to Orleans along the water is a famous route to check out. Bourne is really close to historical places like Plymouth, and there's also great beaches along the way. I also love looking at different homes and Cape Cod has some very cute cottages.

The 17 Mile Drive through Pebble Beach in California is what I'd recommend. The homes, the views, the famous golf course! We drove it just over Easter breakand got to walk around Pebble Beach, stop for lunch in one of the club houses, and did a little shopping there. Then back on the drive - it's just home after home after beautiful home with some of the most incredibleviews of the Pacific ever. There is also the famous"The Lone Cypress" treeon the drive. Very pretty windy roads - definitely recommend taking it!

I'd like to add two of my favorite drives.
Scenic Byway Highway 12 in Utah.
This road travels though Red Rock Canyon, is get's close to Bryce Canyon National Park, travels thought the Escalante Grand Staircase National Moument, though slick rock scenery and over the Hogs Back with breat taking views on both sides of the road.
Then you climb up into the Boulder Mountains before reaching Torrey, Utah.
Capitol Reef National Park is just 11 miles down the road on Hwy 24.
Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway
The road leaves Moab, Utah with the canyon walls so close together that there's not much more than the road and the Coloroado River between the sheer red sandstone walls.

The classic great American drive that comes to my mind is the drive down PCH 1 in California on the coast - you can start anywhere but I've only done it from San Francisco down to LA, and it's breathtakingly beautiful.

Well for once I feel like an experienced traveler - of the list I've done all but Vermont. I dream of many far away places that other travelers write about but US does have some wonderful places. I also love the Icefields Parkway drive from Calgary through Lake Louise, Banff and on to Jasper in Alberta Canada. Happy Travels ...Funtimes
PS I have not been on this one but isn't there a highway to the sun - prince Edward Island???

Re: Great American Drives List
Another fabulous drive is from Santa Fe, New Mexico up to Durango, Colorado... not long, but beautiful all the way! Fly into Albuquerque, drive the 100 miles to Santa Fe, spend a couple of days there. Then start out early going norththrough Chimayo (stop for lunch and see the Santuario de Chimayo), then head up to Taos. Spend the night in Taos then head northwest up through the mountains to Durango and spend a night or two there. You could do the drive all in one day (about 10 hours), but it's much more fun to stop along the way!
