Does anyone still use them?
How are the "All you can know" travelers researching trips nowadays? Travel shows, TripAdvisor, Twitter?
For an upcoming trip, I mostly used the internet although I did borrow a guidebook from the library. As it was several years old, it wasn't that much help so I bought a little Frommers guide with a map (and even this was not as current, having been published in 2009).

I still reference travel books. Sometimes it is nice to sit in Borders or B & N and just read a little. I also like to bring the book with me as I travel. My last purchase was my "Chile" book (Lonely Planet) last November. I remember when I travelled through Europe in the 80's and "Let's Go Europe" was my friend!

Our local library has oodles of [mostly] updated travel guides. I like Insight and have the HKG issue on my desk right now. I sue Lonely Planet for research prior but don't take them on trip. I wrestle the netbook from hubby to keep up w/tripadvisor and such. Sometimes I take the Insight or Eyewitness but they're so heavy!! (I actually weighed 2 before leaving and took the lightest one--hardly the way to determine how "effective" a guide can be!) I buy books for the cities we frequent or expect to return to, like HKG--gotta love used issues!
I usually use the internet but I still love reading through a well written and researched guide book - when I find one, I usually take it with me to the destination
Like others in the community, I use the internet extensively to do research before taking a trip, but I always go to our local public library and take out several travel books (Lonely Planet, Moon, Frommer's, Fodor's, etc.). Our library has a lot of current publications. Since we can take books out for up to three weeks and get three renewals, I always bring at least one book with me on the trip and can renew on the road if need be.
Our inspiration for travel destinations come from various sources; but the internet is where we've been getting the majority of our information when it comes to planning for them. The only exception has been our visits to national parks. We buy the guidebooks for the trail maps and relevant information on the trail and area.
We are headed to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. I've spent the most time planning for this than other trips.

Maybe I'm just too cynical regarding guide books, but I don't think their annual updates are too dependable. Not sure a live person is out there checking out the facts. I do glance at them, but I really trust the Internet more, especially, when I am lead to believe a regular person has actually written the review. Silly right?Quote:
