Hand-held GPS
Hi, folks. I am a true techno-peasant. My husband wants a GPS for his motorcycle rides and perhaps to take with us on trips overseas. I balk at taking anything on a trip that's bulky or heavy. I finally got old/wise enough to get down to a small carry-on for overseas trips, so it has to be at least compact.
He really wants one for Christmas and he deserves what he wants! (I'm such a good wife!) So, I bet more than a half dozen members can advise me! Thanks in advance."wherever you go, there you are"

I'd recommend the Garmin 60cx or 60csx. Basically the same unit but the csx has acompass and barometric feature. The features I really like about my unit (60cx) are;
- hand held
- takes 2 AA batteries and they last a long time
- you can hike with it, or drive with it, it has routable directions (ie, I'm in Montreal and want to drive to New York, it will pick the route and give you turn by turn directions)
- it fits in my shirt pocket when I'm hiking
- it's water proof (see above)
- it has a very sensitive antennae
- you can add an external antennae if you need to use the unit away from line of sight of satellites, for example, put the external antennae between the shade and window on an airplane and watch the route on your screen.
- you can connnect it to your PC and load your own waypoints or waypoints from the internet. You can save your tracks to your PC as well.
They have a nice comparison of units here;

kyshel, you might want to check out the information omegaet posted some time back about the GPS he bought from the old luxelife before the electronics were discontinued. omegaet raved about using it in the US and in Europe:

Re: Hand-held GPS
kyshel....t-2-f is correct. We bought the Garmin nuvi670 when LuxeLife has them up for auction. We wanted the 670 because it can with the North America and Europe maps already loaded. We entered all of the locations of the LL properties we bought before departing the US.....and the system took us to the front doors of each place in Prague, Switzerland, France and Italy. We even had front desk personnel input addresses for their suggested restaurants and used the 670 on public transportation.
We like the traffic warning feature (it is subscription based, but worth the extra money). It is portable and has a rechargable battery (your husband will like that feature when riding his bike), or can be operated with a in-vehicle charger. Garmin makes good stuff and their support is excellent.
At least go to Best Buy or maybe Outdoor World and compare the features of the different models....keep your receipt, your husband will probably want to exchange it!- Ω -
