I have to say that in all my years of travelling, I have never been bumped or had my bags lost or anything broken - lucky me!
When I went to Ecuador, many folks on my flight found out their bags did not come with them and quite a few of them were going on to the Galapagos - I felt so bad for them - I can't even imagine what it would be like to arrive in a destination and have no clothes, etc.
Wow Denise -I didn't think you were considered a true traveler until you have had all of those things happen to you. I have the "gold lapel pin" to prove I can check off all of them from my bucket list. You should head to Vegas with that kind of luck. haha

And what's wrong with getting bumped? I go to the gate as soon as I get to the airport and ask if the flight is full. If it is, I ask to be put on the bump list. I've gotten bumped several times and have earned free flights. I got bumped two consecutive days flying from Portland, OR to Paris and got $1600 in Lufthansa vouchers. My daughter didn't want to get bumped the second day, so she got only $800 in vouchers. The $2400 was almost enough to get four of us roundtrip tickets to the Canary Islands.
Heck--I've had my luggage "misplaced". Delta used to have an "Escape" program--last minute destinations available via phone (olden days!) Call Sunday, pack and leave Thurs or Sat. Usually 3 nights. Took my folks to Stockholm once--$300 RT each total air.
So, I went to Warsaw with a GF. (She called Sunday and said, "don;t tell me we're going to Poland?" Oh yeah!)
Well, we made it but my one checked bag didn;t. I bought jenas and a sweater in a flea market and had a receipt hand-written on a paper bag tearoff. Delta took that and and reimbursed me for almost $200 for basic toiletries and clothes. My bag arrived the day before we had to leave. It was the first time I ever had box seats at an opera and wore "blu djins" as my receipt said.
Ah, the good times...
We use a small regional airport. Luggage coming from Philly to our local airport typically doesn't arrive. Seems Philly "shuts down" at an early evening hour! We have had luggage bought to our home two days after a trip. On our one trip, we really believed they opened the suitcase, used a hose, a saturated our clothes!! My husband's tennis shoes actually had water in them when they arrived. Oh well....the challenges of travel!
