Hotel Too Hip?
Anyone had one of these experiences recently?

just give me good old fashioned luxury and service with out all these goofy trendy gadgets - free WiFi is nice or a computer lounge but enough with the "hip" factor ;-)

we just encountered the "hip" factor at the Langham Place in Hong Kong (forthcoming blog, "Tale of Two Langhams"!!)
But, long story short, they moved us to "special spa" upgraded room after a few nts and some of the hip design issues became issues.
1) exchanged a fabulous bed to a nice futon
2) all the bells whistles from their clever marketing carried from room to room
3) stepping INTO the jacuzzi tub to reach the massive towels (bath blankets!!) was awkward, then moving them out of the adjacent shower to find ONE hook to hang them)
4) bath was so big, it encroached on the living space
I'm too square to be hip any more!!"wherever you go, there you are"

02-18-2011, 10:15 AMI like some of the concept hotels for a change of pace.
For instance, LL offered The Glenn Hotel in Atlanta last year....I bought the package and enjoyed the hip club atmosphere. However, I would have tired of the "act" after more than three nights.
So, I guess I like a little Hip for short periods, but certainly don't make all of my hotel choices on that basis alone.

I'm with you on this one, mountie. I enjoy a little HIP now and then. Maybe it is just a matter of needing some change from my ordinary lifestyle I usually lead. I do need enough light to find my way around. I also want enough distance from the club scene to get a good night's sleep. Probably better off not having a tub next to the bed, since I don't care to risk a fall on the way to the bathroom in the dark.
So, some HIP is good, but not all the time or totally over the top.t-2-f

Gimmicks are fun--like the HIP stuff at Langham Place:
Note to Me notepads
Place Me (hotel map/directions Eng and Cantonese)
Smooth Me (nail file)
Polish Me (remover pads)
Art Collection thruout hotel (fabulous!!) with "palying cards" that show many of the pieces
There are oodles of these fun marketing treats in the room and around the website/hotel property
When I can't get adequate light in the bathroom to shave my precious legs, then there's no HIP about it!! Hip Hip Boo-ray!!"wherever you go, there you are"

I don't think I stayed at a "hip" place. I surely am not from a "hip" location! (Amish country.) I am looking at a property in Stockholm; the Rival. It says it is Hip......kind of scares me!! hhehhehehahaha

I've stayed at Aloft Hotels, part of Starwood, and they seemed quite hip, not too hip tho. Reasonably priced, but the rooms were on the small side.

02-22-2011, 05:00 AMNormally, I refused to pay the excessive rates many of the HIP hotel charge. I just don't connect with the whole "W" thing. However, I have stayed at a couple of Marriott's new Autograph Properties - Grand Bohemian in Orlando and Casa Monica in St. Augustine. Both offered nice experiences without feeling I was entering a club scene.
I guess I could learn to adjust, but I hate to pay all of the extra money.

02-24-2011, 06:48 PMWe stayed at the Sagamore Hotel on Miami Beach recently and it was very HIP and very expensive. However, it was a fabulous experience and something all of us will talk about for a long time to come. No, no, it is not necessary to stay at HIP hotels all of the time, but now and then is just a whole lot of fun.
