how many folks do you know that have never flown or maybe only 1 time?

I just read an article, can't remember what publication, and it was stating that more than 50% of the US population has never been on a plane. I know we have all flown many times but it got me to thinking do I actually know anyone who has made it to adult hood and never been on a plane! Just in 1 hour between family and co-workers I have found 5 folks who have made to mid life and never been on a plane and I found a few others that were on a plane as a child ( all said it was a family trip to Disney World when they were little) but have never flown since.

All of them said that 9/11 only increased their resolve to never get on a plane but that they had felt strongly about not flying even before 9/11.

As someone who loves to travel and explore, I can not even begin to fathom never flying!

That half of the U.S. population has never been on an airplane is a very surprising statistic. As much as I dislike flying, and the events of 9/11 certainly magnified my dislike, I enjoy exploring the world. The end justifies the means.

Unfortunately, I am not surprised about this. Too many are not curious or open to experiences beyond their own little sphere. I have been on week long trips with teens to another country as a leader and was discouraged at the way some of them whined about not being able to get their hamburgers at McDonalds, and having to ride public transportation (subway). And the few parents along, catered to it, probably because they were the source of the attitude.

A group from our local rural high school of 10 kids plus 2 leaders is currently on a whirlwind trip of London, Paris, southern France and into Spain. The article about it in the local district news spent half the space defending the worthiness of this trip, which was paid for with fundraisers and parent contributions (not taxes). Sad.

I don't think I know anyone who has never flown....possibly, but no one comes to mind.

I remember my first flight was a Piper J-2 Cub...pretty exciting to be in a taildragger as a kid!
