Identify theft
Something else to worry about. This is just too easy and unbelievable.....be aware and avoid people carrying small briefcases or packages! Do look at this. It is very credible.

I'm surprised that it's just coming to the attention of the general media?

that's what happens when everything gets those digital chips in them - now it is so much easier to steal your data - I just renewed my passport and they too have the new electronic chip in them - I hate it!

accessory companies have sold the blocking wallets and such for a couple of years; so it really is hardly news

It was news to me. Maybe it is brought up in the media again since these types of credit card and identity thefts are on the rise. It certainly is an alarming aspect of travel and every day life.

I'm sure that's very true and add the holiday travel season...
I've seen passport covers that have the block--wallets and hanging document holders, too.
The interesting wallets are the ones [used often in Asia]--they have one outside pocket for transit cards, so they arent' blocked and can be scanned on buses, subways etc"wherever you go, there you are"

Anyone in Memphis can go online or Walmart and buy a blocking wallet or passport case. It isn't NEW at all. If it's NEW to some people, then they just aren't aware that these products have been in the market for years.
I hate to disagree, but the accessories industry is my background and the info ISN'T wrong. If Memphis population is ignorant about this sort of problem then it's only ignorance, but that's not new either, like TV!!
Memphis? I can't recall every visiting...they really DO have TV?? Pretty sure I remember TV is available in Nashville and Knoxville. Heavens, we have it in Kentucky--and we like it."wherever you go, there you are"

12-09-2010, 02:27 PMHere are 3 mail order companies which sell such things. With the holidays here, there will probably be specials before and afterwards. (Please note - absolutely no financial interest in any of these - they have a financial interest in me - haha Good shipping & customer service experiences too)
www.packinglight.net Find their packing videos helpful & entertaining & they have a large selection of clothing too. Sometimes their vendors are found for cheaper prices at Sierra Trading Post - where if you see something you want, you shouldn't wait.)
www.luggagepros.com Have gotten good prices here, esp on Eagle Creek Tarmac luggage. (No matter what guarantee)
www.magellans.com Probably the largest selection of security products and other travel aids

Once you get on these companies email lists, you'll get reminders and announcements of sales, so if you can wait for the 'free' shipping offers and markdowns, do so. There are usually opt out messages at the bottom of such, if it gets to be too much.
Good luck!
