Interesting question asked when entering the US....

This is the first time we were asked this question: "How much money are you bringing back to the US?" We were just asked this going through customs from Greece arriving to the US. Interesting and wondering if it related to the economic situation happening abroad.

This is a question you answer on the immigration card coming back into the country. It has been there since I can remember. You are limited to take out and bring back, I think, 10,000 US Dollars.
The immigration officer might just have stressed this question because of the Greek economic situation.

I agree that this is on the form however, we typically are asked what we were doing and what we purchased. Typically never had an officer asking us how much we were bringing back to the country AFTER the vacation.

I think some of this has to do with the recent news articles I have seen on US citizens becoming citizens of another country and the IRS announced that they are going to more aggressively pursue folks who are trying to get money out of the country. I am suprised they asked you how much $ you are bringing into the USA. I agree it probably had to do with the economic situation that Greece is experiencing.

I recently saw news that Greece is deploring the money drain on their country - well to do people trying to take their money out of the country. Could it have something to do that your passport possibly indicates that you are half Greek, or of Greek decent, and the US is trying to make sure that no illegal moneys are being brought back from Greece? Just a thought?
