iPad, iPhone, or what for foreign travel?
I'm going to be traveling in South America for a month at the end of the year. Currently, I have an antiquated flip phone that I'm thinking about upgrading to an iPhone, but I'm also thinking about getting an iPad instead. Any recommendations? I don't think that I'll be making many phone calls, but I would like to have internet access for e-mail, researching travel options, etc. Are there any foreign compatibility issues that I need to be aware of?

When I went to Mexico & Guatemala, I called AT&t who is my carrier and added the world traveler plan - phone worked great and the charges were very minimal. I just have a regular old phone - nothing fancy. Just had to make sure my phone had the required internal stuff to use in another country - something to do with the band signals? I also was able to use my Kindle for reading and answering emails. Also, internet cafes in latin America are very inexpensive so you can always go in to one and use a computer if it is just emails you need to check

we don't make calls overseas, so we use an Acer EEE netbook. It does have skype so we can use it as needed to call home or (E 1015 from Tiger Direct)
It has kindle application available. Runs about $350 out the door, lots of memory, speed and battery life, compact and lightweight. You can get w/Windows Starter or upgrade for a few $."wherever you go, there you are"

We just got a small netbook to take with us when we travel - lighter than an Ipad and lot less $
Runs Windows and will do everything we need for travel

I have been using my small netbook. It is fantastic! It is small and lightweight. I only use it for the internet, I keep no other information on it. It was only about $300 about a year and half ago. I love it! Plus, when I am traveling, if I want to check restaurants, sights, events, I can check. Love it! ps-see you in South America!!!

I'm seriously leaning towards the iPad. I probably won't get the 3G model, just the WiFi model.

07-20-2011, 01:34 PMHey, 15bigfoot, I have to tell you, I think j-s-2 is pulling your leg regarding the app. We've made some requests for a Luxury Link app, but nothing yet.
j-s-2 - you are taking my role away. Stop it.
