Has anyone ever heard of La Tomatina? I just heard about it and love it - the revered tradition of man versus ripe tomato in Spain. I guess it is basically the world's largest food fight when when truckloads of over ripened tomatoes are brought in to the central square and everyone dives in - so to speak.
It sounds great - but I would love to hear from some world travelers about this.

Dana--this is one woman who will not be attending! Sorry that I don't have first-hand knowledge; I bet another contributor must know something...
All I can say is that many moons ago when helping a friend in the produce biz, I experienced a rotten tomato dripping over my shoulder as I hoisted a crate of the otherwise delectable and lovely fruits to my shoulder and WOOOOHOOO--yuck, gross, nasty smell--worse than a rotten potato.
I guess there's a place for everyone!
Thanks for sharing!"wherever you go, there you are"

Great fun very chaotic takes place betw 11am and 1pm. Problem is there are so many people it is hard to get into main square so you will porbably find yourself a couple of block away from main event but regardless people will be on street partying and having great time.

Thanks - that is good to know about the crowds. We were thinking that this could be a kinder/gentler alternative to the running of the bulls. You know, cultural yet safe. But we do love a good street party - which is such a fantastic way to get a glimpse into a culture and city or town.
Perhaps we'll bring some gaspacho in a squirt gun if we make it there
Cheers!

Thanks Kyshel - that is good to know. I have (sadly) come across a very rotten potato before - and it was the single worst thing I have ever smelled. So I guess that the term "rotten tomatoes" has truly earnedits use in society.
