Luxury Link vs. TravelZoo - a case study
I recently received an e-mail from TravelZoo with their top twenty deals of the week. One of the deals was for the Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes, CA. I've looked at and been interested in buying the Terranea package on Luxury Link, so I thought that I would do a comparison between the deals offered from the two companies. The TravelZoo deal was per night, so I multiplied the cost by four to make the stay the same length as the Luxury Link deal. The Luxury Link price assumes that the package was purchased for the lowest auction price.
TRAVELZOO:
$848.68 for four nights in a resort view room. This includes taxes and resort fees.
LUXURY LINK:
$1,176 for four nights in an ocean view room. This includes taxes and resort fees. The ocean view room costs $30 more per night than the resort view room, for a total of $120 for the four nights.
Breakfast for two each morning (around $40 per day or $160 for four days).
Valet parking with in and out privileges ($30 per day or $120 for four days).
$150 spa credits per person ($300 total)
CONCLUSION:
The difference between the two packages is $327.32. For $327.32, you get the upgrade to the nicer room ($30 per night or $120 total for the four nights), breakfast for two each morning (let's say $40 per day per couple or a total of $160), and in and out valet parking privileges ($30 per day or a total of $120). That adds up to $400, so you're spending more but you're getting a nicer room and some great amenities. I probably wouldn't consider the Luxury Link deal to be that much better, but when you include the $300 in spa credits that the package offers, that definitely tips the scale in favor of Luxury Link.
The Luxury Link deal slam dunks the TravelZoo deal!

Michael, I've bought a few deals from TravelZoo over the years, but I don't think that I've bought any lodging deals since I discovered Luxury Link. You guys rock! Happy holidays.

Thanks for the comparison. I still seem to like LL better. I have looked at Sky Auction packages but never purchased one. I heard that their customer service is nothing compared to LL. I have enjoyed my packages from LL!!!

12-20-2010, 11:40 AMgreat deal, great value but...
on this deal comparing Terranea resort on LL vs. travel zoo, i wonder if 4 nights is too many. the deal itself represents great value but do guests need or want 4 nights versus 2 or 3?

The TravelZoo deal was per night and the Luxury Link deal was for four nights, so I multiplied the per night cost on TravelZoo times four so I could better compare the two deals.

12-21-2010, 11:00 AMi understand why you mulitplied by 4 nights. i wonder if a 4 night stay is too long which makes the LL deal less attractive.

I have done quite a few Sky Auction packages - in fact, my 1st 2 trips to Guatemala were through Sky Auction and were quite a deal!
Also have done my airfare to Ecuador, Peru and Belize through Sky Auction - never had any complaints. They are starting to get more luxury type properties on the site but also many more bidders so you have to know your rates - I find that some folks way over bid!

Thanks for the tip, Denise. I've heard of Sky Auction, but I've never checked out the website.

Hi dhdanner,
I have looked at Sky Auction packages and airfares. Some seem to be too good to be true. Airfares for up to 8 people sounds great. As more bidders find the site, prices go up dramatically and as you said, you better know your prices and $ limits as not to overpay. That is also true for LL auctions, and the LL Mystery Auctions in particular.
