Not going for Mardi Gras but thinking about going next fall with husband and friends. I've been dying to go. Seems like things have really picked up in the last few years. Is it best to stay in the heart of things like the French Quarter or a quiet spot a little removed from the action?
Not my kind of celebration, however, I have been in Peru & Guatemala for Semana Santa which happens around the same time - much better in my opinion

Nice picture, Katie! We are celebrating " Fassnacht or Fasching" here in Austria on Feb. 21 on the ski slopes of the Zugspitz Arena in Tirol, Austria.
Fasching (carnival), in Western Austria called "Fas(t)nacht", the period between Epiphany and the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Carnival celebrations are characterized by music, dancing, the wearing of masks, masked parades, wearing clothing of the opposite gender, silliness and farcical court trials, the custom of "verkehrte Welt" and a general joie de vivre. The carnival reaches its high point in the last week, beginning on Thursday and continuing through the three "holy days of carnival" (Shrove Sunday through Tuesday before Ash Wednesday). Carnival customs include elements of old peasant culture, masked balls at court and late-medieval, early Renaissance fools' festivals held by tradesmen and guilds. All this, in addition to activities in towns, also takes place on the ski slopes, and usually it is great fun.
