09-05-2008, 07:57 PMMembers RAISE Prices on Mystery Auctions????
I don't get why members are "racing" to out-bid one another on Mystery Auctions that just began & have 2-4 DAYS to go! Wouldn't it be SO COOL to actually 'win' a trip for $25.00 or some other ridiculous price IN THE LAST 10 MINUTES of the 2-4 day auction??? Yet everyone is banging up the price now when there are 2 entire days left to sit & go higher.
It just doesn't make any sense to me that members are actually losing due to "doofiness", I know that's not a real word but it just seems to fit, if one particularly wants to win that trip, I think establishing yourself with a minimum bid of $1.00 higher makes sense so as to be alerted/track, not in $100 increments "just because", that's stupid. Why not "save" the racing for the actual END, like that last hour or 10 mins. or 30 mins??

ajortolani, I looked at the list of bidders who participated in the last Mystery Auction and I don't see the names of any of the members of this community, other than michael, who happens to be an employee of LL. When you used the term members, did you actually mean participating public? I doubt you will see many auctions in which Community Members are chasing the numbers.
You are correct from a logical standpoint. It makes no sense to bidon a Mystery Auction or any other auction until the last minute or so, since there is a 5 minute rule regarding closing times. On the other hand, most on-line auctions, here and other sites as well, are based on emotions rather than logic.

Thanks for your reply Mountie, but I don't understand how one bids without being a member, I look forward to hearing about that. And thanks too for agreeing with me, perhaps I'm too logical(?),or perhaps its the Virgo in me, lol.

Hi ajortolani,
Anyone who registers with LL (either to receive
the newsletter or to
place a bid),
is able to participate in the Community. Perhaps some bidders just haven't
ventured into the Community
to post yet, but as soon as
anyone registers
they become
an all round LL member.

Re: Members RAISE Prices on Mystery Auctions????
I sometimes place a bid to test the waters--who is interested in actually buying the package and where the bids move?
I once bid on a mystery auction and toward the end, I found that no one was bidding against me. (It was a 3 night safari package) When I realized I might win it, I had to figure out how to tell my husband we could be going to Africa!! I didn't know how much I wanted it until I rooted thru the website and used the clues to determine the mystery property. Wow--did I luck out! This took place while I was stripping and staining my deck.
So, some auctions are not very active, while the last one I purchased went beyond the set time with the 5 minute rule extension after extension...which, by the way, I really detest. I've been a bidding war for the Aja in Istanbul and had a set limit, so I lost, but I kept bidding from the beginning to [MY] end.
I hope you'll log in, ajortolani, and bid--but, of course, never against me, right? Welcome!"wherever you go, there you are"

ajortolani, it was the use of the term Member. I think of member in terms of Community Member. I don't really know what the staff refers to anyone else who signs up and bids but does not become active in the Community. Whatever the case, nice to have you participating and bidding. Hope your first auction purchaseis a real steal. Good luck.

I got a chuckle out of your comment that you were stripping and staining your deck. That sentence can be read two ways. Anyway, I agree that some people may just be testing the waters and hoping that maybe other people aren't bidding on the auction or don't know about it. After all, it's possible that someone can win an auction because nobody else is interested in it. I'll bet that a lot of newbies are doing that because they don't realize how many people use the Luxury Link website.

That's an interesting take, thepiranha! I would have most likely placed a comma where necessary to separate the two actions; had the snetence structure been different--perhaps I'd have used a semi-colon--one of my fave punctuation marks! The funniest part is that I really was staining a small area to test, while stripping the remainder!! My husband was just a bit incredulous that I could multitask so well! I almost didn't tell him about the auction, but he kept looking at me funny when I'd take off the chemical gloves and get on LuxuryLink between "coats of goop".thepiranha wrote:

PS to ALL--did you see the Dalat, Vietnam mystery auction went for $615? No overbid there!"wherever you go, there you are"

I probably would have written that I was staining and stripping my deck, even though you do the latter prior to the former. That way there would have been only one possible interpretation. Then again, not everyone has as twisted a mind as I do.

ajortolani, I noticed a couple of the community members testing the bidding waters on the Chic California two night package today! I guess the idea is you might catch a break and steal one now and then.
