Love Lake Bled. Spent half of my honeymoon there. Been trying to go back. Beautiful castle and views. I still think it is less touristy than some places.

Peyto Lake in Banff National Park on a clear day may be one of the most beautiful sights we have enjoyed.

A little surprised Lake Titicaca lying between Peru and Bolivia didn't make the list...so huge, so high and almost devoid of commercial traffic and contamination. A magic place to experience.

Be careful when you are at Lake Atitlan, the Cyanobacteria hasn't improved during the past couple of years (at least according to the former manager of where you will be staying). We used kayaks one afternoon, but took special care to remain upright and out of the water. It is a beautiful lake and you will undoubtedly enjoy the view from your terrace.

Crater Lake in Oregon is one of the more beautiful places on earth. Trying to avoid staying home as what would have been my 10 year wedding anniversary approached, I went there with my younger daughter who was also recovering from a recent heartbreak. Trust me, Crater Lake is quite the cure. After 24 hours in this idyllic and pristine paradise we found ourselves asking "Henry who?" and "Bob, what was his last name?" This one is worth the trip from the other side of the US or from anywhere in the world!!! So happy to see it on the list!

What a list! I can now add these places onto my list of places I want to go! I've always heard about Crater Lake, but hearing such spectacular things from others makes me want to go and SOON! I was planning a California trip this spring and may have to add on Oregon now.

I thought Fuschlsee in Austria was gorgeous when I went there. Exactly what I pictured when I envisioned a mountain lake. The Austrians clearly love it--they have all sorts of outdoorsy activities located there. Although my Austrian vacation wasn't my favorite one, the scenery was absolutely some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. I think that's the lake that is in the Sound of Music.

The list sounds great, but I thought it was missing some of the important ones. Lake Taho in the US is not called for nothing "King of the Lakes", and my favorite one, Lake George is named "Queen of the Lakes".

I enjoyed Lake Fuschl (Fuschlsee) in Austria and the Hotel Schloss Fuschl when it was a Relais and Chateaux property, but there are a whole slew of beautiful lakes right in this area, like the Wolfgang See, the Mondsee, and all the smaller Lakes where "The Sound of Music" was filmed, etc.

I was always partial to the Koenigsee in Germany, not far from Salzburg and Berchtesgaden. Better yet, the Obersee, situated just a few hundred steps from the Koenigssee, that few tourists ever take the time to walk to, was an even better discovery. What a truly magnificent small lake, hidden away, with it's sheer cliff falling into the lake, with its unspoiled beauty preserved from commercialism and few tourists, yet a small working alm hut at the end where you can enjoy a beer, a glass of milk, an "apple schorle" a German favorite of apple juice and sparkling water.

Ooh, LLTravelfan, I forgot about the wonderful Koenigsee! I even did a special trip to see it and go across it in one of the "green" boats. I can't believe I missed the Obersee--I had no idea it was there. Now you have made me want to go create an apfelschorle from my apple juice--good memories! Speaking of movies/TV filmed in the area, I heard that the Koenigsee area was where Band of Brothers (Spielberg's miniseries) filmed the Eagle's Nest parts--anyone know if I'm right or not?

Well, there is always next time to visit the Obersee. In the meantime, enjoy some Apfelschorle.
You are right about Spielberg's miniseries. "Band of Brothers, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest" was written by Dr. Ambrose.... Dr. Ambrose was the historical consultant for Steven Spielberg's movie and the book is an indispensable companion to the miniseries. It is available on Amazone for your Kindle.

I have to agree with paularec. Not only is Crater Lake spectacular, but it's practically in my backyard. I can get there in just three hours. Most of the tourists visit in the summer, but it's even more spectacular in the winter when the azure water contrasts with the surrounding snow.

Lucky you!!! We will be seeing the Eibsee, the glacial lake right below the Zugspitze in Germany next months. If the picture posting capability gets better with the new platform, I will post some pictures of the Eibsee in Winter. It also is a truly spectacular Lake. Here is a link for now Google Images
