One Piece Carry On

Last week I sent my daughter off to Copenhagen on British Airways via Heathrow. At the ticketing counter, my daughter was told that she was only allowed ONE carry on not the standard two. This was a rule imposed by Heathrow for any flights connecting in Heathrow to other points in Europe... not a BA rule. We were astounded... so needless to say, her carry on really looked strange with all sorts of things tied to the outside of it to accomodate everything that was in her purse and briefcase!

So heads up on this one!

I think that was imposed in LGW and LHR after the last potential highjack attempt--with the fluids limits, etc.?? It was originally NO carryons but
they they allowed clear zip bags and then extended to one carry one--regualr--handbag, computer case, etc.

I always ck each airport and country for regs/rules. TSA still permits corkscrews to Eu, but many Eu countries do not allow them in carryons on the return.
I have seen some really interesting things in the confiscated bins--don't ask--some look a bit personal!
Some of the strangest "enforcement" I've seen has been JFK TSA trying to confiscate my 1oz mini bottle of alcohol (while they were arguing which of them was correct--as I stood by with a copy of the regs but they never asked me...)
I called TSA after that trip and reported the agent in question. They are actually very willing to listen and follow up on email and telephone enquiries.Yet I've had agents in Bucharest ask is that thing in my luggage "to make hair turn?".
Yes--it WAS a curling iron!!

Given the rising fuel costs, I've noticed a crack down as well. In the US, 1 carry on really is the standard at this point, with the exception of allowing a large "tote" that you could visually see as a purse and not luggage. However, I would note for those not accustom to traveling in Asia, there the crack down is signficant. Not only are they a bit strict about the 1 carry-on minimum, they weigh them. I can't remember what the max is (I think 14kg), but if you are over it, it is to the discression of the airline to allow you. If you are more 2kg over the max, they generally will make you check the luggage.

I unfortunately found out the hard way last trip. Although my luggage was well under the carry-on size restriction, I had a slightly heavy souvenir in my luggage which brought me 3kg over the limit and required I check. This was on Cathay in HK, which is an absolutely lovely airline, btw.

I'd love to hear who else has experienced this type of situation in other countries. Best Wishes to all other travelers.

That's interesting, Maylinglai--I had Cathay Pacific do same (NRT to HKG) to me pre-911--very strict, i guess. First time I had 21" rollaboard checked. (I did not argue that it was heavy, but it was within size regs.)
I just returned from flights in/out of JFK. I had my small roller and handbag--no problem. Young lady at gate had larger-than-mine roller + very large fabric tote + handbag/computer case. Granted, the flight was a pretty light load, but I bet she didn't know that in advance--I also watched 3 other pax come thru cabin with more than 2 bags. After that, I quit looking--why do ailrines have any rules? I don't get it.
