Hi,
Has anyone been to Palm Island in the Grenadines? We are thinking of going there for our honeymoon in late September. . . I would love to hear some thoughts on the resort and location. Thanks!

Re: Palm Island
Hi jennagreck, Congratulations on your upcoming marriage! My husband and I went to Palm Island a few years ago. It was an LL auction package. You didn't tell us what you're seeking in a honeymoon destination, but since you're looking at Palm Island I have some idea. Honestly, my first thought was that you could do better with some other packages featured on this site. We were in a beachfront cottage, so the major plus was the beachside location. It was only a few steps to a beautiful beach, and the sounds of sea were wonderful at night. However, the rooms are next to each other, so there's very little privacy. The rooms were OK, but nothing special. The food was very good. Not many choices at each meal, but it was pretty good. The thing is - it's a very small island. In about an hour you can walk the entire thing. The atmosphere was a little unfriendly - I think that was due to management's attitude, just a bit stuffy. Most of the guests kept sort of to themselves. Unfortunately, there also many sand flies that week. So it was nearly impossible to enjoy the beautiful beach. I guess this is rare, but it impacted our trip.
We took Air Mustique from Barbados, to Union Island. They pick you up at Union Island, and it's only about a 10-minute boat ride from there. The Grenadines are most beautiful, the water is clear, with great snorkeling. You might look at Petit St. Vincent, another private island. We went for a day trip. There the rooms are set apart around the island, so you really have some private space. I haven't seenthat propertyon LL in quite some time though. Cotton House or Young Island would be other good optionsin that area.
You might also want to look at the British Virgin Islands. There are a few private islands that might be what you're seeking. In November we went to Guana Island. I wrote a bit about it in the VIP blog section. There were a number of honeymooners there and everyone had a wonderful time. That's really a special place - it had that certain something that we were hoping to find at Palm. You'll find others here who would recommend Peter Island also.
I hope this has been somewhat helpful. If you have other questions, please let us know. I'm sure others have many ideas for honeymoon spots! If you have some specifics, that would help us narrow down the recommended spots. In any case, of course you will pick the perfect place!

Oh my, it wasn't all that bad! Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the sand flies....We had a good time on the trip. It's just that, especially for a honeymoon, you want it to be really special.

Thanks for your comments. They are very helpful.
We had looked into some of the other resorts that you had mentioned, but because it is hurricane season some of the resorts are closed. From what we are told, Palm Island is in an area that is not really affected by the hurricanes which is a bit reassuing.
Really we're looking for a vacation that is laid back and beautiful. Don't need too many ammenities, just a book and a cold drink for the beach!
Thanks again.

Hi disneygal, I'm glad you mentioned the sand flies, it's important. If the only activity is the beach and you can't use it, then it's important to know that about a location. It's always a good idea to research as much as possible about a location and the time of year you are going. I'm sure that sand flies don't come every year, but maybe they do in some places.
Thank you, I just laughed when I read your post.

Re: Palm Island
Hi. About the sand flies, they said it was unusual. I had read other reviews that did not mention this issue, so I was really surprised. We were there in December, and September may be more rainy. What about Peter Island? Looks like they will be open and offer a hurricane guarantee. Or Biras Creek? I really like Mexico for a laid back beach trip. Of course they are not exempt from weather issues, but the resorts are usually open unless a storm hits. And one final idea, if you have the time, French Polynesia is worth the trip. For a honeymoon, you can't top it. LL has some good packages too, but it is a long haul. Hope this wasn't totally confusuing!
