Re: QUESTIONS ABOUT AN ALASKAN CRUISE

NO WAY!!! I was on her when she blew up in port in Miami--you've seen her beginning and I was there at the end...Grand indeed!

Re: QUESTIONS ABOUT AN ALASKAN CRUISE

Thanks for the suggestion about fishing before I go on the cruise, but what am I going to do with the fish that I catch? We're spending a few days on land before going on the cruise and it will be close to two weeks from the time that I'm done fishing to the time that I get off the boat. Any suggestions? I'll definitely check out the links that you posted, but I think that I'm going to have a logistical problem with getting my fish home.

thepiranha, how about doing what I do, when I go fishing and I do not intend to eat what I catch? Catch and release!

Re: QUESTIONS ABOUT AN ALASKAN CRUISE

Mountie, if I were fishing for game fish, I would catch and release, but I'm a big fan of salmon and I would like to bring home my catch. Wild salmon is going to be prohibitively expensive this year and possibly for years to come due to the ban on commercial ocean fishing from California all the way up to Washington. We always buy a whole Copper River King, arguably the best salmon in the world, have it fileted, and then stock our freezer so we can enjoy it through the year. I would like to skip the middleman and stock my freezer with fish that I've caught. That way I can enjoy both fishing and eating my catch. I don't eat mammals, so fish is a significant part of my protein intake.

Re: QUESTIONS ABOUT AN ALASKAN CRUISE

    Hi thepiranha,

I can see where your catch would pose a problem if you want to bring it home. Now, I have heard of canneries canning your catch and shipping it home to you. You might want to check out that idea. When you contact the outfitters, ask them this question if they can can and ship your catch to you, or if they have any other suggestions on how to get it home for you.

I just checked this resort http://www.waterfallresort.com/QandA.html and found this under frequently asked questions:
Q: Do I get to bring home the fish I caught? How is it packaged?
A: Yes. Generally, those guests fishing together share their daily catch. Your guide will provide information on how you can have your fish cut: steak, butterfly, filet, or whole. Our professionally trained fish processing staff will cut and clean your fish accordingly. It will be vacuum packed and labeled by guest name and sorted to insure that each guest on the boat receives a fair and average share of the day's catch. There is information available if you wish to have your fish smoked, canned, or mounted. (see Custom Seafood Processing) [return to top]
So it seems possible to bring home your catch.

Re: QUESTIONS ABOUT AN ALASKAN CRUISE

Thanks again for the info. That's a great looking lodge! I still have a lot of time to figure out what I'm doing since I'm not taking the trip until July of 2009. You've given me some good tips.
