Re: ski vacations
Hi funtimes,
Wish it was me in the Hotel Edelweiss picture, wish I was that young again.... I am female, but you have to add quite a few year... that clarified, here are a few more suggestions for your trip to Bad Gastein... I mentioned the Grossglockner pass. Here are some pictures of it

You asked about how best to extend the 5 days at the Gruener Baum in Bad Gastein. I suggest you look at the 4 day LL auction package for SLH of Schloss Fuschl at Lake Fuschl. It is located just a few miles south of Salzburg. We stayed there some years ago when it was still a R&C. Wonderful place, a former cardinal's residence, it was very plush then and the current chef makes headlines with his food creations...

From Schloss Fusch, you can visit the famous Wolfgang See. And you can also easily visit Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace, and maybe even take in a concert... But also Berchtesgaden with its Salt Mines in Germany is just over the boarder a few miles away. You can visit the salt mine. They outfit vistors in the traditional miners garb, then you board a mining train and in you go into the mine. Where the train lets you off they hand you a felt cushion and down you go on a 50 feet high slide and when you get down there, you board a boat where they guide you over an underground lake. Pretty neat stuff and well worth a visit, especially if you are "young at heart"... www.berchtesgaden.com/e/cities/berchtesgaden/salt/mines.htm

There is also Hitler's Eales Nest perched on top of a mountain

overlooking the Koenigsee, Germany's smallest Alpine Lakes, ringed by high mountains like the "Watzmann and his 7 sons", and the cloister of Saint Bartholomae which can only reached by boat. www.koenigsee.com

I think the Salzburg/Berchtesgaden/Koenigsee area is a wonderful area to explore, and as I said, LL has a nice 4-day package at Schloss Fuschl at the Fuschl See.
