    Skiing destinations?

Hi fellow travellers. For those of us getting ready for the ski season, what is your favorite destination? We've been to a number of areas, but always looking for something new. Thanks!

    Re: Skiing destinations?

    Hi disneygal,

We too love to ski. We auctioned a LL package for the Hotel FitzRoy in Val Thorens in the Trois Vallees area of France. Have skied there a number of times staying at the 3star Hotel Le ValThorens which is right next to the FitzRoy. Skiing in the Trois Vallees is excellent, you never ski the same trail twice. You ski from Val Thorens the highest point into Meribel and then to Courcheval (Olympic territory) and and back. Wonderful vistas as well. The Trois Vallees are located in the French National Park of the Tarantaise mountain range. The Hotel FitzRoy is a former Relais&Chateaux property of great luxury and comfort, and they have just added a completely new spa. We have never been able to stay there until the LL auction came along. We will ski there this coming February and we are looking very much forward to it.

Another favorite of ours is the Arlberg Hospiz in St. Christoph, Austria. See my post on the Arlberg Hospiz blog. This also is a wonderful place, with great ski in ski out facilities and wonderful food and drink and entertainment.

There is also the Hotel Kristina in Lech for which LL sometimes features auctions. Wonderful luxuries accommodations, good food and drink and wonderful skiing in Lech, Austria. It is just a few minutes from St. Christoph and you can ski from St. Anton, to St. Christoph to Lech and back.

Hi Travelfan - thanks for the reply! I actually considered that Val Thorens package, and I'll be interested to hear how you like it. We've heard great things about the Trois Vallees area. I think that's higher on my list than Austria. I must have seen "The Sound of Music" toomany times as a child! So far our favorite spot in Europe is Zermatt, but hope to have more adventures yet to come.

    Hi disneygal,
I will definitely report back on the Hotel FitzRoy in Val Thorens. As I said skiing there is great. You can't beat the "Gemuetlichkeit" in Austria though. The Arlberg Hozpiz is one of my favorite hotels, still is a Relais&Chateaux. Only skied Zermatt in the summer which was none too good. Love Zermatt in the Summer and have climbed the Matterhorn with my husband and a guide in my younger days.

PS: Don't forget to rate the post

    Merry Christmas

My all-time favourite's Keystone, near the town of Dillon, in Colorado. For anyone who's aski enthusiast, this is a fabulous place not to be missed. Set high in the Rocky Mountains, near the Continental Divide, a few hours driving time west of Denver, Keystone offers not only magnificent mountain vistas but some of the best ski trails anywhere.

You may have heard of Aspen and vail in Colorado. While they too offer great skiing, I prefer Keystone as it has a huge selection of amazing ski runs from world-class ones for experts to more sedate ones for the novice and a wonderful variety of others in between laid out on three mountainsides. Superb, though pricey, accomodation is available at the resort but youcanfind good digs in and around Dillon or some of the other smaller towns in the area.

Why, there's even wine tasting available and soaking in a soothing hot spring atGrand Junction!

Hi curtiejoe - thanks for the suggestion! I knew there must be some fellow skiers in this crowd. We have not been to Keystone, so I'll check it out.

I'm sure there are lots of other skiers among the LL Community. I know for sure that 'travel fan' is one. I bet you'll get info on a number of other great skiing locations.

One other thing I'm also absolutely convinced about is skiing in Colorado. Wherher you try out my favorite, Keystone, or some of the many other fabulous ski locations in the Rockies west of Denver, it'll blow your socks off! there's nothing better or more exhilarating than taking a liesurely chair lift ride up from the base to near the top of a magnificant, snow-covered mountain AND then having the absolutely fantastic experience of skiing down along very long and breath-taking runs through stately spruce and pine trees and eventually making it down to where you started. What's an another amazing feature is that the run down from the mountain actually takes a lot longer than the chair ride up!

Before you go, get a CD by John Denver called Rocky Mountain High released by the folk singer in 1973. On it, he sings about the peace found high in the Rockies of Colorado.

    Re: Skiing destinations?

    Hi curtiejoe,
Maybe I shouldn't admit this, but I'm certainly old enough to know that John Denver song! So far in Colorado we've only been to Telluride, which was great. But our favorite mountain in North America is Whistler. A wonderful destination all around - I'm hoping it won't be spoiled by the preparations for the Olympics. Here in the east it's not shaping up to be a good season, although I guess there's still time. We do try to make a trip every winter out west or to Europe. So thanks again for the suggestion!

Whistler Blackcomb in BC has excellent skiing in a majestic mountain setting. It's the Number 1 ski resort in Canada for sure. Yet, I find the Alpine-style village that's at the base of the ski trails a bit too "plastic" or artificial-looking to make the whole experience at Whistler as good as the one you get at Keystone in Colorado.

So many links to so many different resorts for skiing...handy for the ski enthusiasts.

But, to me your post smacks suspiciously of crass commercialism and looks like outright promotion of certain resorts, as you set out very little information abouteach resorts. Say it isn't so.
