    Southwest Buys AirTan

The purchase ofAirTran by Southwest Airlines has gone through. http://www.komonews.com/news/business/121120324.html

I hopethiswill open up the flieghts to better coast to coast flights for them. Southwest said in their announcement that they will be dropping AirTran's baggage charges for the first 2 bags, to match with the Southwest policy. Horray! I hate these fees.

All these airlines merging - I see higher prices in the future and more fees - monopoly anyone ;-)

Poor old US Air and American--all by their lonesomes...
Southwest will do their regular shuttle style airline for a while. They're already dropping a lot of Air Tran flights that duplicate SW market.
Since neiher is a full-service or legacy carrier, it remains to be seen what will happen in the long run.
Get ready for the next episode of "Engulf and Devour"...

Wow....wonder if Southwest will keep some of the smaller, regional airports that Air Tran used. Would be nice if Southwest picked up some Caribbean routes also! That area has really lost most major carriers! AA and US have cut back schedules.

I don't really see this transaction causing me of change.

I agree Kapper---I've never had either of these limited market carriers in my home town (I realize you're across the Pond!) Just think about it in reverse: RyanAir buying Whizzair or some other LCC...jacking UP fees to match Ryan policy. I can see where somebody might be excited about that bag fees, but I only carry so it wouldn't effect me, either. I wouldn't fly SW anyway.

I fly Southwest every opportunity I get. I have sun/moon roofs on all of my surface vehicles and I keep looking at the ceilings of those Southwest 727s just wondering when the next one is going to open up so I can see the sky!

I should have said 737, not 727.....and it was the top of a roof panel that opened that past April on a flight from Phoenix.
