I think of flying Southwest along the same lines as taking the subway.....efficient method of travel from "A: to "B"....not much more!
I need to edit my comment...I was on a Southwest flight this past weekend and noticed a young US Army enlisted man among the last to board (and the flight was already delayed an hour due to weather). The crew encouraged us to find our seats, stow our carry-on and get ready to attempt to go wheels up so we could hit our landing slot.
As the flight began final approach, the First Officer announced the crew and passengers were honored to have a special VIP on board. The young soldier was returning from Afghanistan for a brief visit with family before returning to continue his deployment. The First Officer encouraged us to give the soldier a round of applause for his service and to remain seated and allow him to deplane first so he could immediately make his way to his family waiting to greet him beyond the TSA security.
Not only did the passengers begin applauding, but may of them cheered and shook his hand, patted him on the back and thanked him. The Southwest Captain came out of the flight deck and shook his hand before he stepped into the jetway.
What a terrific gesture by the Southwest crew......and what a moving experience to see the soldier's family and friends warmly greet him as the rest of us proceeded to claim our bags.
God bless the young man and keep him safe when he returns to
Afghanistan!
