Re: Travel Sites
Hello LL community - I have used travelzoo for years - GREAT just returned from Washington DC Hilton Alexandria $99 night with breakfast fabulous hotel wonderful location etc Travelzoo trips always are a good value. We also use radio shopping show out of Elgin Illinoiswww. radioshoppingshow.com You can listen - when travel America or a marathon show comes on - you bid on the air We have won several trips to the carribean from them Our best value was $300 to Jasper Canada lodging at 5 star Jasper Park Lodge Lift tickets to Marmot basin and breakfast for 300$$$ !!!! Lift tickets alone would have been $400.
Right now Travel and Leisure magazine has a promo with prizes for rating your favorite resort properties www.TLWorldsBest.com - ranking ends March 19th so hurry Happy travels...Funtimes

I seem to be on the opposite position from this thread. I am constantly recommending LL to friends and encouraging them to contact the LL website. Friends have bid on trips to LA and Chicago because they travel to operas all across the country. I don't know if they have won a trip on LL yet, but they are now plugged in. While LL is not necessarily a "budget" site, the prices make the trips offered very, very affordable from my perspective. Cheers...Marolyn

Re: Travel Sites
Hello Funtimes,
Thanks for the T&L link. I was a bit aggravated by the inability to write in your own nominations -- some of the places I've stayed, which are small and intimate and much nicer than some of the places listed are not there! This was particularly true in Tanzania -- why were the big hotel lodges listed, while the small luxury camps were ignored? I think surveys should always have a write-in option.
Cheers,
Julian

Hi! It's not an auction site, but I like Fodors travel forums...there are a lot of people there who have a lot of travel experience and are really nice about answering questions, though it isn't as luxury focused as LL. It looks like LL is getting there too, but it's still a pretty small community right now.
I also like Tripadvisor for reviews of hotels, though I have heard (I think it was in the SF Chronicle travel section) that sometimes people review their own hotel under a false name (and give it all high ratings) or review competing hotels (and give them all low ratings) so I think you need to take Tripadvisor with a grain of salt particularly if there are only a few reviews.

Re: Travel Sites
Jasher, I agree completely with your assessment of the T&L survey. Yes, most of the hotels they discuss are great, but there are definitely others which should be included as well! Conde Nast Traveler seems to do a better job putting together their "Reader's Choice" lists; not only are the surveys more extensive and inclusive, but I've even been interviewed by magazine writers after submitting my opinions!

Re: Travel Sites
Hello - Glad some tried the T&L survey - good luckfor a win!!!I agree that a readers choice is always best! Thanks for the tip about taking tripadvisor with a grain of salt - call it midwest natural trust - but I'm always naive to that sort of commercialism. LL reviews are so good because it seems we are trusting of each other through our acquaintance in these posts. Enjoy the travel experience and suggestions from others in the LL community as always ...Funtimes
