I just read an interesting guide on tipping while traveling (The Ultimate Tipping Guide - FoxNews.com ). It had some good insight and ideas.

Who knew it wasn't best to leave the tip for the housekeeper in your room at the end of your trip? Guess I need to change how I take care of that one.

Any other LL members have insight into this little travel task?

Why is it so important to follow "guidelines" for tipping?

In the travel book I am currently reading, the author has an interesting mind set on the whole tipping thing so I thought I would share the paragraph from the book: "tipping confounds me because it is not a reward but a travel tax, one of many, one of the more insulting. No one is spared. It does not matter that you may be paying thousands to stay in the presidential suite in the best hotel: the uniformed man seeing you on the elevator, inquiring about your trip, giving you a weather report, and carrying your bags to the suite expects money for this unasked for attention. Out front the doorman wants a tip for opening a cab door. The bartender wants a proportion of your bill, so does the waiter and chambermaids sometimes leave unambiguous messages with an accompanying envelope, demanding cash.It is bad enough that people expect something extra for just doing their jobs; it is a more dismal thought that every smile has a price." An interesting perspective that I feel has some merit. He does say a few sentences further down that they do probably need the extra money to get by although he feels they should be getting paid more in the 1st place - which is basically how I feel about this subject.
