so far only 1 terminal in Philadelphia has the full scanner and it is not the terminal we usually use to fly out of - it is the terminal for US Air and United which we never use so maybe we will stay lucky!

By "stay lucky" do you mean not getting groped or getting groped?

12-06-2010, 11:15 PMHaven't been through the scanners yet, but intend to ask for the aggressive pat down instead. A friend who is a retired radiologist concurs with me that the present machines are not trustworthy as to calibration. The back scatter machines concentrate the radiation on your skin and eyes. I have had 3 minor skin cancers removed from my scalp & elbow - Chose your parents carefully - fair skinned Danish & Scottish genes aren't the best to ward off sensitivity to sun.
Plus Jane said even if you close your eye lids, she has seen lit saying it is bad for your eyes. I'm not sure it is the best way to deal with the problem anyway, and I certainly can understand flight crews not wanting the excessive exposure. I think I read somewhere that TSA had collected 11 metal guns in the first half of Nov. the metal detectors caught these.
At the same time I can understand flight crews (and fellow passengers) not wanting anyone disruptive on board. Even before 9/11 I noticed that someone from the cockpit is always standing by the incoming door, checking people out as they board. I imagine they have honed this skill very sharply lately. I always smile and say "hi" and say "thanks" when leaving. Passengers have gotten more savvy & alert to others I think, and will do their best to stop something now. And what about what is in the mail pouches and baggage areas?
Yes, "they" say the machines are safe - but I am old enough to remember when shoe stores had those viewers that you stuck your feet in to see if the shoes gave you enough room, as supposedly being harmless (along with smoking). My mother would have none of it, and she slathered me with the best sun blocks available.
Alas, she didn't consider thinning hair! LOL! Which is why I like my LL hat so much! Almost as much as my Red Sox World Series cap.
A friend nearly lost his life when a pick up truck swerved to the other side of a busy urban street. Nick was just waiting on a sidewalk for his bus to his office downtown. Ya can't stop "Sh*t happens" 100%.

Ah Ha, ShiningLight, the dreaded Pedoscope. My brother, much my senior, used to brag about how much better his shoes fit than the shoes my parents bought for me.
The local shoe store had discontinued the use of their Pedoscope by the time I was old enough to shed my booties and start wearing hard sole shoes.
My brother just loved looking into the viewer and watching his green SKELETONIZED metatarsals wiggle inside his new shoes.
Unfortunately, I missed out on the thrill.
Later in life, my brother suffered from major discoloration in all of his toe nails.
His podiatrist claimed it was a fungus and prescribed topical nail fungus cream for daily use.
To this day, I believe it was abuse of the Pedoscope!

" My brother just loved looking into the viewer and watching his green SKELETONIZED metatarsals wiggle inside his new shoes. ......His podiatrist claimed it was a fungus and prescribed topical nail fungus cream for daily use."
LOL! SEE! The little brother got the last laugh!
Those of you who now skip and pause through those X-ray machines may have fungus all over you in 10-20 yrs! Not just the toes! You'll look like the crew at the Bar Scene in Star Wars! LOL! Fungus soaps, fungus cremes, fungus washes - buy that P&G & pharmaceutical stock now! Dermatology is THE specialization for med students. (A little bit of snark here)
I remember getting to wiggle my toes too. As my mother pinched STRONGLY around the toe box edge to see if I yelped! I'm sure the shoe stores in Boston & New Haven hated to see her coming, as they knew they would have to haul out 20 boxes of shoes; and three chairs plus a salesman would be tied up for at least an hour!
I guess after that childhood pinching desensitization, being groped by TSA people doesn't phase me. I retain my right to yelp and have as little excessive radiation as possible.
Thanks for the smile! What is your choice Omegaet?Last edited by ShiningLight; 12-09-2010 at 11:36 AM.

I just finished my full body scan at JFK....wow....Unfortunately, I can't remember too much of it because we were too overwhelmed with missing our flights!!! Do you believe I actually walked into it because of all the craziness going on around me!!!! Then, I couldn't get out of it....my husband just ran for the flights and left me there!!! Now it is funny but at the time, I just was so confused. What a night...but back to reality today. JFK and all the airports were crazy yesterday due to the problems in Europe. Lots of delays and lost baggage. Good news is that I survived the full body scan and somewhere there is a picture of me covered in bug bites!! hehahah......
