I do agree that traveling Americans are fairly easy to spot by their clothing. We hardly travel with Prada handbags, wear our Bottega Veneta shoes or our fur coats. Eddie Bauer, REI, Sketchers or Merrell shoes, etc, define the savvy traveler from the US. I'd rather wear sensible clothing since I don't have the luxury of dragging around multiple suitcases with me, nor do I have a closet full of designer fashions in the city I am visiting, like residents. The comparison is quite silly. I see as many badly-dressed locals in any major city in Europe as I see the chic and "fabulous". Rick Steve hardly looks like a local in any of his videos.Quote:
Provocative thread, I must say.
I've found that the most inconsiderate tourists are the Chinese and Koreans who travel in huge groups and are extremely noisy, yelling to each other at great distances and always seeming to get in my way when I'm trying to take a photo. I can tell by the way they interact with us that people in most countries like Americans.
Totally agree with you, P!! I completely forgot about the hordes of North Asians in Egypt and recently in Prague. Even had an encounter with a massive tour group at an airport, where they rushed the gate at boarding. The gate agent was pretty cool and got the tour leader to tell them on the PA to retreat until she signaled them. Well done!
We're off to Bali in 2 wks and I understand the Chinese are very formidable with their buses and large groups. We have been forewarned to avoid certain sights at specific times. Of course, we avoid the beer guzzling Aussies on holiday--fun folks but really obnoxious when "lit". HAHA
Many years ago (um 1995) one guy in our group was the quintessential ugly tourist--bulging multi-pocket vest, 2 cameras--kept stepping in front of me every time I tried to get a photo. I ended up with several pics of the back of his head. I kept one and I still see Clive to this day!
