What do you bring home from your overseas trips?
I always find it fascinating to see what others bring home from their trips abroad. Just as there are many ways in which people travel, there are many things that some people bring home that others think are totally ridiculous. Returning from Cancun last month, the woman seated in front of me on the plane was gushing about the giant sombrero that she had purchased. She planned to use it as a serving platter for chips. Meanwhile, I'm thinking that with the limited amount of luggage that we're permitted to bring with us, a giant sombrero was probably the last thing that I would want to bring home with me.
What do you bring home with you from vacations? T-shirts? Jewelry? Art? Anything else interesting?

While I'm on a trip abroad, I like to search out and buy a professional (i.e. "arty") landscape photograph of the place. It mostly started because I found I consistently take crappy photos. Then when I get homeI have it framed and I have a wall in my hallway devoted only to places that I've been. It's nice to be ableto show where I've been without forcing friends or family througha vacation slide show.

I love the idea of bringing home professional quality photos and showing them in the same area of your house. I always look through my photos and print and frame the best ones, hanging them up in different places throughout the house.
t2f, how did you remember a post that's almost three and a half years old? That was way before I had even discovered Luxury Link. You must have a great memory. Let's keep this thread going since there are so many new members of the L.L. community. Do you have something to add?

I love bringing home shells. We have a lovely collection! We also used to bring home sticks that we used as walking sticks....well, that has changed with airport security after 9/11. Now, it is a considered a weapon! So, no more walking through security with sticks! We do have some neat tree pods that were shown to us by children. They make lovely decorations along with dried coconuts!
Of course, we always go into a local store and purchase the native coffee....love it!! We always ask what the local people drink. FOr example, our friends in Guatemala introduced us to San Vincente coffee. It is inexpensive and tastes chocolately....SUPER!! (and it is soooooo inexpensive!)

It is fascinating and horrifying what gets brought home as a way of extending our trip or to serve asa reminderof where we've been.
I traveled with a friend who tried to bring home fruit tart from a bakery in Paris. It didn't make it out of the plane.
Pre 9/11, another friend was able to pack a sword from Toledo in her carry-on.
Wine--just a bottle or two--from the area (and NOT from duty free) has been a consistent buy for me. I miss the days of being able to carry it on -(

I love the idea of bringing a tart back from Paris, exflygirl. That's the crazy kind of thing that I would try to do. I ran into some kids in Puerto Vallarta who were selling iguanas that they had caught. We were flying home the next day, so I arranged to meet them at a certain place and time to buy one of their iguanas, but they didn't show up. Probably a good thing that they didn't because I would have gotten into serious trouble if I'd been caught.
I usually bring back some wine from Europe, wrapped in clothing in our check-in baggage so it doesn't break. We brought home four bottles of tequila between the two of us on or return trip from Mexico last month. I agree with you about not buying from duty free. We usually go to a supermarket or specialty shop to get our bottles. Costco sells tequila in Mexico and I've purchased my "souvenirs" there before.
Great idea on the shells, Bonniejoy. I'll bet you have quite a collection.

Hey P...we did have quite a collection until the pup thought they were wild animals and grabbed some of them and threw them around and then must have thrown them into the wall!! Little shell pieces everywhere with lots of sand!!! On the positive side, I did keep some small ones in glass containers with water and started plants in this pretty decoration. We also have them around the house. Its funny when it snows and they are outside in the snow!!

That's funny, Kyshel. Would you rather that he leave her in Paris or that he bring her home to see if you approve?
