My wive's hobby is to get every ff mile she can get. She had us fly first class to Hawaii and back in first class and also on this most recent trip to Germany we enjoyed first class in lay-flat beds. Once you enjoy these benefits, it's hard to go back to economy and God forbid to pay for a ticket. I take my hat off to her....
I am trying to use my ff miles to put a first class trip together to South Africa and back.

That will be fun! Iooked at this with AA. Problem and cost was flying via London. The taxes were crazy. Must look another route. LL-which route are you looking to put together?
I avoid flying through London like the pest! We are using LH from MUC to CPT and then SA from Victoria Falls back to the States. Haven't fully worked out the details, but it won't be AA.
Flying AA you can avoid the high London cost when you fly to CDG or FFM which are much more reasonable.
We used Delta to go to South Africa and flew Business/First on my miles. It was absolutely fabulous and I don't recall any bad extra taxes or fees. While in SA, we used South African Airlines to go from Joburg to Capetown and then to Nelspruit and back to Joburg. We flew in there economy plus for the shorter flights.
Good to see you back betsyv. I think Delta would be great, but we are originating in Munich via LH (UN ff) going to Cape Town and using SA to fly back to the US. Unfortunately, Delta does not allow one ways. Well you can use Delta one way, but you are paying the full r/t ff miles for one-way trips as far as I know.

Speaking of FF miles, looks like this might be a good window of opportunity to consider 'churning' a USAir M/C and/or an AA Visa for some sign up bonus miles before the merger and the two FF programs are consolidated.

"Churning" is cancelling your credit card and then 6 months later apply for a new card with the same company to get the sign-up bonus again.
