I used to use them to upgrade, however, since they added ridulous fees to use miles to upgrade, it is not worth it now. Maybe if I was flying to Asia the fees would be worth it to upgrade to business or 1st class since the flights are so long.

I can get a better deal flying business class to C & S America on sale then to use miles to upgrade and pay the fees!

I try to use a program where the miles don't expire, so that eventually I can bank enough of them and use them on a long haul, where they count most.

I'm thinking about the Chase BA card that would add up to an extra 100,000 miles on our FF account.

I use ff points to book our trips. It works for us.

D-which card is adding 100,000 points? I did get the BA credit card over a year ago and it was great until they changed to Avios points. The Avios points are beneficial for inter country flights in South America. I booked two of our South America flights on LAN with Avios points. I now have a few left and plan to use them for a hotel in Baltimore. Have you looked at the Chase Sapphire Card?

    B,
I got an offer directly from BA as well as from Chase. It is the same Visa CC that offers the following miles:

    • You will get 50,000 bonus Avios after you make $1,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening
    • 25,000 bonus Avios after you make $10,000 in purchases within the first year of account opening
    • Plus an additional 25,000 bonus Avios after you make an additional $10,000 in purchases also within the first year of account opening

I collect and protect my miles frequent flier miles.

On longer international flights, I really try to use miles to upgrade. and gain a little more comfort.

I don't mind paying extra fees, if and when I can afford them.

Hi D. Nice Offer. Do watch all the taxes with using BA flights though. I was trying to use AA points to Europe and it was going to cost $700 on BA!!! (UAL/USair/Luft) would have cost about $50 (they were not flying through England.)

Yes, all the taxes for booking a trip connecting in the UK end up costing around 60% of a regular ticket (in my personal experience with desired destinations). That's why I'm banking them (with this offer I will be getting close to the 200k mark), and will be using them on a different oneworld partner for a business/first class dream getaway in Asia or South America.

It's inconvenient to switch to a different group after you've achieved elite status. Just have to work around the outrageous taxes.

The best use of FF miles is on international flights, so I never use them on domestic flights, at least for myself. On domestic flights when I'm traveling with my husband, I may use miles for his ticket but always buy my ticket, so I can continue to earn those precious elite miles.

My preferred way to use them is to buy an international ticket that is upgradeable with miles or a SWU (System Wide Upgrade) into premium class. But often those seats are limited and hard to find since the airlines only release so many of those seats. For our long flights to Hawaii next month, I could not find such seat availability on my preferred flight after checking regularly for months. There is one Delta flight in BE international seats ATL-HNL that I wanted. I've flown in those seats (lie flat, or almost lie flat seats) previously but my husband has not, so I really wanted to get those seats on that flight. He's tall and big and that's one of the reasons he doesn't like to fly. In the end, I bit the bullet, buying my ticket up front on that flight for me and using my FF miles for his ticket.

Your're burning up DL FF miles so a 'husband' (who we know doesn't like to travel) can fly up front and then you are willing to buy a seat in the same class? I'm sure he will enjoy the cocktails and Macadamia nuts!

    Aloha!
