I spent some time in Portsmouth. (many moons ago!) My second English BF was a Pompey boy. City is a bit on the gritty side (as is much of southern England). I recall seeing the fort from the Le Havre ferry. Looks a lot better now than it did in the 80's! Chopper transfer sounds kind cool, tho...

We too spent some time in Portsmouth visiting the maritime museum there and walking the streets of the quaint port.True, the town was a little grimey. However, this was some years ago while we were visiting Cornwall and Land's End. We loved Saint Michel's Mount, a private castle that you can only walk to when the tide is out. Enjoyed the Clotted Cream and scones with strawberry jam at tea time.
