Loved Ecuador and want to go back - did not do the area where Mirage is - looks great! We were in Ecuador in 2001 and parts of our trip had to be cut short since they were having a revolution - they threw out the president - I think it was the 9th one in only a couple of years. I actually found it to be quite interesting touring around old city Quito and being right outside the presidential palace and see tanks all of a sudden rolling in & soldiers start stringing barbed wire around the presidential palace - pretty cool. All the tour guides starting hustling all the tourists inside the old (I think) San Francisco church and locked us in for a few hours until they felt it was safe to let us out. Our 2 days to Otavalo got cut and we had to leave the next day for home - lucky for us since the airports were shut down later that day. So have to get back and finish the trip!

Thanks all for the tips. Just putting together Galapagos and might add on to it. Any places to stay in Quito that you recommend? Would like smaller, hacienda type property. I did notice some haciendas within two hours of Quito.
