I've noticed that there aren't many LL packages for hotels in the UK and would like to recommend that LL consider the Mortons House Hotel in Corfe, near Poole, in Dorset.
This is a long shot - it's certainly not a 4 or 5 star hotel - but it is an Elizabethan Manor House which has retained virtually all of its original features (although with infinitely better plumbing!) and I do think it is well worth checking out for anyone interested in staying in an historic property whilst touring the UK.
I stayed there some years ago and can honestly say, the reception was comparable to that of the Savoy in London. It was in the dead of winter and my husband and I were traveling on different trains: I arrived early from London, on a dark, wet Friday afternoon, and was feeling rather anxious as to what was in store for the week-end; but, as soon as I crossed the threshold, I felt completely at ease for the duration of our stay.
In brief, I was immediately taken in hand: within seconds, my bags/overcoat/umbrella were whisked away and I found myself comfortably planted, in front of a huge roaring fire, with a glass of excellent wine.
So continued our week-end: the room was most comfortable (smallish, due to the four poster bed, but well-proportioned, outfitted with period antiques, and overlooking a charming courtyard/garden); the restaurant was traditional (i.e. did a decent roast beast/Yorkshire pud and claret, nothing more); and the service was - I cannot emphasize this enough - absolutely impeccable. Every need was anticipated (and accommodated) without any fuss at all.
The location of Corfe is a little off the beaten track but perhaps no more so than somewhere in the Cotswolds. The train service from London is good and the village itself is quintessentially English. From my impression, most of their visitors come either to hike along the coastline or to play golf (and I believe they also arrange holidays along those lines), but we happily spent most of our time in the hotel, making little forays into the village or around the Castle ruins, before returning to a welcoming tea in front of the fire. Absolute bliss!
Dear LL, please do take a look at their website (Mortons House Hotel & 2 AA Rosette Restaurant, Corfe Castle, Dorset).
