07-31-2012, 07:40 AMI guess the people who overbid didn't know the going price - it's not exactly obvious from the clue "Western Europe".
It's probably still good value if it is La Bonne Etape. We stayed there last year as part of a longer trip which included Marseilles and Nice, but I could happily have stayed there for a week without moving - just lounging by the pool, digesting lunch and contemplating dinner (seriously, you could spend an entire afternoon perusing the wine list - or, more accurately, book - and the grand tasting menu will immobilise all but the most ardent tourists). It is also a good base if you want to explore the area (though for this you'd probably want to have your own car - and go easy on the wine!)
If I discovered that I had overbid on a mystery package, I would probably try to combine it with another package - maybe stay for 6 nights instead of 3, for example. I'm curious, though - what would other people do?

Unless bidders are able to figure out the property, and then check it for its normal auction price, I think they may get confused by the "Retail Value". For this auction for example, the price still looks good compared to the Retail Value.
14 Bidders 17 Total Bids
Retail Value $1,244
Highest Bid $501
Savings $743Life is too short.........travel now!

What confuses me even more is when people bid in HUGE dollar increments, especially several days before bidding ends. That is often what tends to drive up the price faster and higher than necessary to win an auction at the most competitive price.

08-01-2012, 06:17 AMI am always amazed at the bidding patterns of some participants. Good for Luxury Link, because they are often able to get a higher price for a Mystery Auction package then if the winner (??) just tried bidding in the regular auction.
Stick around long enough and you begin to figure out the way it works or does not work.
It has been a long time since I bought a Mystery Auction.
