I am glad to here the heat was manageable - we leave New York on July 4 for 16 days - starting in Hong Kong - then Beijing, Xian, Guilin, Hangzhou and Shanghai. If anyone has any tips on how to organize our days so that we don't melt I would be most interested - also, what were the best shoes for touring around - sandals (or is it too dirty) or tennis shoes? I think I have a pretty good handle on what to see and do (we will be travelling with my 12 year old daughter on a tour arranged by East Tours) but would very much appreciate any packing tips, must-do's or must'see's. many thanks.

just came back today from a 15 day trip to hongkong, beijing and macau. went on our own too as we too are not too fond of organised tours, however having said that for china a tour option is good, or else at least arrange a local tour guide to meet you at the airport and take you around to all the attractions. hong kong is a fanstastic place and quite a mix of the west and the east. lung kwai fong (LKF) is a good place to try out the various bars and eating places ---- went to AGAVE which was a Mexican place with excellent and authentic food and great margaritas, with good value for money. Visit the Peak and Disney world, along with the np360.com.hk sky rail, if it has opened again. Hotel Peninsula (expensive but very good) and Holiday Inn Golden Mile (in heart of the town) and not too expensive are recommended, along with Shangri La, Mandarin Oriental and Ritz Carlton to name a few. There are many other good value for money hotels too.
In case you need help with the tour from hongkong to beijing, which includes to and fro airfare from hong kong to beijing and stay for 2 nights at the china world hotel --- you can contact dragonair or their agent, it is very good value for money.

I agree that Guilin is extremely beautiful and a trip on the Li River is not to be missed. Just try to avoid a boat crammed with tour groups. They will chatter non-stop and will interfer with your enjoyment of the landscape. The best way to be on the river is to hire a small private boat.....slower and less comfortable, for sure, but much more satisfying. Be prepared for an ordeal at the end of the river trip.....many, many aggressive vendors selling t-shirts and all sorts of trinkets.
A place often missed in China is Suzhou...an easy trip from Shanghai. It has many old classical Chinese gardens which are exceptionally beautiful. It is a city of canals...many polluted..but a boat trip through some of them is interesting. You can look in the windows of homes along the way if that appeals to you and if you dare since the houses are built right to the edge of the canals.
When waiting to board a plane in a Chinese air terminal, be prepared for a crush as soon as the flight is announced. If you avoid the crush you won't get any overhead space to store your luggage... If you join the crush, sharpen your elbows. Jackie H-F
