Re: Anybody know about the Luxury Link Machu Picchu package
bonniejoy03...another alternative for you to consider (speak to your primary care physician), if you have previouslyexperienced altitude sickness, is Acetazolamide or Diamox-SR
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetazolamide.
The drugis commonly used in high altitude climbing (for us, since we live at sea level, almost anything above 6,000 feet is "high altitude" for our systems, which usually gives us headaches and a general feeling of malaise). We have used Diamox-SR in Mexico, Ecuador and Peru, as we enjoy trekking at higher altitudes, and reallytry not to spendextra days acclimating, if we can avoid it.
In Cuzco....we did opt for the oxygen pumped into our suite and drank cocoa leaf tea frequently. If you take the OE trip to Colca Canyon, you will be ascending a pass in excess of 16,000 feet...so you will be exposed to some altitude.
Don't let the fear of altitude sickness deny you the opportunity to see Peru and Machu Picchu!- Ω -

Re: Anybody know about the Luxury Link Machu Picchu package
Has anyone noticed how often the Orient-Express Peru packages are offered at auction (ie. every few weeks or only a few times a year)?
I just found out I could in fact get frequent flier seats to Peru for sometime in May....and I would love to celebrate my birthday at Machu Picchu...but I don't know if the package will be offered again any time soon
. Any insight?

hi cruisinred
Machu Picchu would be an amazing place to celebrate your birthday. Just to be able to reaach this ancient Inca settlement in the middle of nowhere beyong Cuzco on any given day is enough to give a person a wonderful 'high'.It sure did for me and I got there in October 05, a month after my birthday.I can just imagine how much more special and memorable it would be to stand in the middle of the ancient playing field on the day you were born. Go for it!

Re: Anybody know about the Luxury Link Machu Picchu package
I did celebrate my birthday at Machu Picchu and, yes, it just seems all the more magical. I highly recommend splurging for the Hiram Bingham train if you will be coming or going on your birthday - it just makes the entire day feel like a royal Incan visit! I felt like the "Queen for a day".

hi claasenam
Just curious. Where will you nbe celebrating your birthday this year? At the Mayan pyramids of Tzichen Itza perhaps? Or at the breath-taking Igazu Falls in Brazil? Or in the Forbidden City in Beijing?
I'm hoping to celebrate mine this fall in the Canadian Rockies at Lake Louise.

Re: Anybody know about the Luxury Link Machu Picchu package
Curtiejoe, the Canadian Rockies sound fabulous - happy birthday in advance! The birthday at Machu Picchu was quite a special one, I'm afraid most of my birthdays aren't at all as adventurous. I'll probably be home in California with my family, or maybe if I'm lucky my husband will surprise me with a weekend drive away to Carmel, Santa Barbara or San Diego. My birthday is months away, so there's time for him to peek at this message board and figure it out!

Getting back to my question...

Re: Anybody know about the Luxury Link Machu Picchu package
cruisinred ....the O-E Peru trip has been offered frequently (monthly) over the past three years (the time frame I have watched it). The O-E Peru offerings have been in several configuration, some including Lima, Cuzco and Machu Picchu, some including the Colca Canyon and some offering the Hiram Bingham train trip from Cuzco to Aguas Caliente.Situated south of the equator, this is a very busy time of the yearfor luxury level tourism to O-E properties in Peru (at least this was explained to us by O-E staff when we travelled). As such, O-E and LL may be waiting until the winter rush has subsided before offering the Peru trips again.cruisinred wrote:

Thanks Omegaet. That was just the detailed answer I was looking for.
Now, I just have to keep my fingers crossed that an O-E Peru package come up for auction somtime before May, which is when I would like to go.
