Argentina - Maybe
We're are constantly searching the offerings on Luxury Link in hopes of finding our next great South American adventure.
Argentina has been calling us to return most recently!
Maybe time in the vineyards and wineries around Mendoza and the colorful neighborhoods of Buenos Aries will make "bookends" for a fall trip. We just need to explore and fill in the middle!
Any ideas or suggestions for some off the beaten path destinations ?Last edited by omegaet; 07-05-2011 at 09:08 AM.

I second that request, O. I'll be traveling from B.A. to Mendoza, and then on to Santiago and who knows where else and would like some recommendations on anything that's between B.A. and Mendoza. When are you going?

07-07-2011, 09:27 AMFirst of all, September/October is probably the best time to visit Argentina and Chile. The spring is fairly warm and dry, everything is green and beautiful.
To answer thepiranha, the road between Mendoza and BA is pretty boring and there is honestly nothing worth a stop. I would definitely rather fly and start exploring in Mendoza.
Omegaet: if you are into food and wine, both Santiago and Mendoza are worth a visit. From Santiago you should visit Casablanca and Colchagua valleys and try some Carmenere, their signature grape. Once in Mendoza, there are two main wine regions, Primera Zona and Uco Valley. There are a few hotels inside the wineries there, with Cavas Wine Lodge as the best option.
In September the Glaciers National Park opens its season, so I would fly south from Mendoza to Calafate and spend 3-4 nights in that region.
You can then visit Iguazu Falls that although very touristy, it is also quite unique and can be combined with the Ibera Wetlands which are fantastic for nature lovers and still quite off the beaten path.
You can then fly directly to Salta and explore that region which is very different from everything else in Argentina, with the native communities still very much alive and some of the most spectacular landscapes in the continent.

breakingtrails...thank you. Not planning to spend time in Chile this trip - just passing through SCL on the way to Mendoza. Will likely stay in Mendoza, rather than doing an extended vineyard stay, although Cavas Wine Lodge appears to be a fabulous place, but somewhat pricey and remote. We don't mind driving out to visit the vineyards of our choice.
Flying up to Salta from MDZ is a bit complicated and probably not worth the time nor effort for us. We had a pretty good taste of a similar terrain during our visit to San Pedro de Atacama last year.
Been down in southern Patagonia and the el Calafate region. Maybe down to Bariloche, if LL opens an auction package with workable expiration dates......watching and waiting.
Buenos Aires will be our final stop before returning to MIA and we pretty much know where we will be staying and what we will be doing. However, we're always open to suggestions and ideas!
Thanks again for your comments and thoughts.- Ω -

Anybody know anything about Valparaiso? My daughter will be there for four months starting in August. I'm going to catch up with her and travel with her for around four weeks after traveling solo for a week to ten days.

Hi P. We just spent three nights in Valparaiso in March. How can I help you? We really enjoyed the town! Plus it is a nice point to visit the coastal areas.
