Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica

Have begun to read about the Caribbean coast of CR. Has anyone been there? It sounds like how Costa Rica and Belize were years and years ago. The properties to stay at look so quaint and informal. Any assistance????

Tortuga National Park is a great place on the Caribe side of CR - really nice lodge. Lots of mangrove swamps - not really great for water lovers since there are crocs and sharks but wonderful for nature lovers.



I have also heard that the very south west part of CR is great - have not been there yet but want to go - lots of birds and pristine jungle - supposedly Corcovado Tent lodge is the way to go down in that part of CR.



I have to say, I still love Belize - been there 3 times and will go back - love the beach fun there on Caye Caulker (much better than Ambergris). Also try Roatan & Utila Islands off Honduras - another interesting place to visit.

Hi D....Any lodges to recommend in that area? I am beginning to investigate some properties. I really would like abeach vacation to incorporate with El Silencio so not sure if this will work..

There are some small hotels on the Caribe side but not many - Tortuga Lodge is probably one of the nicest and it is in a nice location. The Carib side is not as popular with visitors and most of them stay at Tortuga. I will try to remember the names of some of the other places - I know I have the information around the house somewhere!

Speaking of the southern part of C.R., you may want to take a look at Lapa Rios which is located in a private nature preserve on the Osa Peninsula. Accommodations are individual "eco-lodges" where you truly feel that you're sharing the jungle with the indigenous creatures who live there. In fact, that's the basic approach that Lapa Rios has -- we are "guests" not only of the resort, but also of the many colorful birds and abundant native wildlife on the preserve. With a high degree of concern for sustaining the eco-system while at the same time accommodating the tourists, Lapa Rios rightly earns its many accolades.



There arelots ofactivities available including hiking, bird-watching, horseback riding, night-time animal viewing, plus various side trips to other attractions in the area. The food was good, especially the wide variety of local fruit which was served regularly and in delicious juice concoctions of all types.



We were there app. three years ago, so don't what, if anything, may have changed since then. It's a great place for couples, honeymooners, environmentally-conscious travelers, adventurers, and a good place to get away from it all, so to say.

Hi S. I think Lapas was offered years ago on LL? It has always been a highly aclaimed property! It reminds me of Morgans Rock in Nicaragua. Thanks D and S! Still investigating and hoping LL offers some nice options.
